Project Goal
  • We applied for this grant because we wanted
    to gain information about the RTI process and the
    various intervention programs that could be used
    for different Tiers so that we could implement
    this process during the 2009-2010 school year.

Objectives
  • Determine the needs of Southern Elementary
  • Participate in ISSP webinars
  • Establish Tier 2 Guidelines
  • Establish Tier 3 Guidelines

Activities
  • Conducted and reviewed a Needs Assessment
  • Reviewed various intervention programs
  • Made school visits to schools that implemented
    the RTI process a couple of years ago
  • Chose a Universal Screener
  • Developing a schedule that will allow for at
    least a 90 minute reading block and effectively
    utilize our support staff

  • Just knowing where to start
  • Trying to picture in our minds how students being
    pulled for various interventions would work
  • Choosing a program that we felt would meet some
    of our most pressing needs
  • Developing a Master Schedule

  • Staff buy in
  • School visits to see how well intervention
    programs worked and seeing how they dealt with
    scheduling of various Tiers.
  • Gaining district level support to help with the
    purchasing costs of the chosen intervention
    program
  • Having the time every month for discussion within
    our cadre

Critical Pieces
  • Determine the needs of our students
  • Matching the intervention to those identified
    deficits
  • Create a schedule beginning with the reading
    block and interventions in place because they are
    the most important part of a school day
  • Train the staff
  • Set guidelines for various tiers and the movement
    between them

Sustaining this Process
  • This should not be a problem. We realize that
    adjustments will need to be made once we get
    started but once the programs are purchased the
    first time, the cost of the consumable components
    will be minimal. We also believe that when
    teachers see the process working and students
    growth in various areas that they will fully
    support the RTI process.
