MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS

MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • 1. Length the distance between two points.
There are many synonyms for length, such as
  • distance, height, width, depth, thickness,
    circumference, radius
  • SI unit for length meter (m)

MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • 2. Volume the amount of space something takes
    up
  • In this class we will measure the volume of
things in mL (liquids) or cm3,(solids) which are
actually the same thing. We will use a graduated
cylinder to measure the volume of liquids and
    gases.
  • For rectangular volumes, you would use the
equation of length x width x height

MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • 3. Mass a measure of the amount of matter an
object contains. A better definition is a
measure of how many protons, electrons, and
neutrons something is made up of.

The SI unit for mass kilogram (kg)
7
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • 4. Temperature a measure of the amount of
molecular motion on the average. Heat makes
    molecules vibrate faster.

The SI unit for temperature Kelvin (K), but
in this class, we will be using Celsius (C).
Water freezes at 00C Water boils at 1000C
8
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • Question
  • When do your molecules vibrate the most?
  • Answer
  • When you have a fever!!

9
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • 5. Weight a measure of the amount of
gravitational attraction between two objects (or
between two masses). One of the masses is
    usually a planet.
  • The SI unit for weight Newton (N)

10
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • Imagine a person who weighs 110 pounds and
complete the chart for that person
  • Their Mass will be measured with a balance.
  • Their Weight will be measured with a scale.

11
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • If a 110 pound person goes to Earth
  • Their mass will be 50 kg
  • Their weight will be 110 pounds

12
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • If a 110 pound person goes to the Moon (1/6)
  • Their mass will be 50 kg (doesnt change)
  • Their weight will be 18.3 pounds (110 pounds
    / 6 18.3 pounds)

13
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • If a 110 pound person goes to Jupiter (12x)
  • Their mass will be 50 kg (doesnt change)
  • Their weight will be 1320 pounds (110 pounds
    x 12 1320 pounds)

14
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • If a 110 pound person goes to Deep Space (away
    from planets)
  • Their mass will be 50 kg (doesnt change)
  • Their weight will be weightless

15
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • 6. Density a measure of the compactness of
matter or how compact protons, neutrons, and
    electrons are

Density Mass/Volume
16
MEASUREMENT DEFINITIONS
  • Common SI Prefixes

These are all in relation to the SI unit

  • Try These
  • 1) How many cm are in 3,075 mm?
  • 2) How many km are in 26.78 cm?
  • 3) How many grams are in 59.4 kg?
  • 4) How many seconds are in 3.62 hours?
