General Overview
  • The primary and or secondary pollutant PM10,
    exceeds its Limit Values in a large number of
    days and it appears that Athens has and will have
    a serious problem with reaching the EU limit
    values in the future.

The city of Athens Characteristics
  • Concentration of the principal governmental,
    administrative, commercial and industrial
    activities of the Country.
  • Concentration of 4 million inhabitants (almost
    half of the population of Greece)
  • Geographical Position Surrounded by Mountains
  • Land Use High density and dissimilar division
    of land uses in the area of Athens
  • Urban transportation
  • Traffic problems.
  • Urban transportation in big proportion made by
    passenger cars.

TRAFFIC LIMITED AREA
  • It has been world- wide applied for the first
    time in Athens in 1982.
  • It is a circulatory policy that also had
    environmental goals.
  • The entrance of vehicles in this central area is
    permitted day by day according to the number of
    the car.
  • It covers an area of 1250 h.
  • It is applied 0700- 2100 Monday to Thursday,
    0700- 1500 Friday. During the weekend all cars
    are free to enter to the center.

MEASURES OUTCOMES
  • Increase of the number of the automobiles (from
    500.000 to 1.600.000) and motorbikes.
  • Failure in the encouragement of the Public
    Transportation System.
  • Issue of special type of card for entrance in the
    area of the ring for the residents and
    difficulties to control the owners.
  • Delay of pedestrianisations in the area of the
    Historical Center.
