days and it appears that Athens has and will have
a serious problem with reaching the EU limit

- Concentration of the principal governmental,

- Concentration of 4 million inhabitants (almost
half of the population of Greece) - Geographical Position Surrounded by Mountains
- Land Use High density and dissimilar division
of land uses in the area of Athens - Urban transportation
- Traffic problems.
- Urban transportation in big proportion made by
passenger cars.

5TRAFFIC LIMITED AREA
- It has been world- wide applied for the first
time in Athens in 1982. - It is a circulatory policy that also had
environmental goals. - The entrance of vehicles in this central area is
permitted day by day according to the number of
the car.
- It covers an area of 1250 h.
- It is applied 0700- 2100 Monday to Thursday,
0700- 1500 Friday. During the weekend all cars
are free to enter to the center.
6MEASURES OUTCOMES
- Increase of the number of the automobiles (from
500.000 to 1.600.000) and motorbikes. - Failure in the encouragement of the Public
Transportation System. - Issue of special type of card for entrance in the
area of the ring for the residents and
difficulties to control the owners. - Delay of pedestrianisations in the area of the
Historical Center.
