History of Mining in Newfoundland

• The first mines of Newfoundland was in Shoal Bay.
• The most common minerals in Newfoundland was
  copper, iron ore, lead, zinc, limestone and
  especially cement.
• The only important mines in operation during
  World War I were those at Wabana.
• Some mines produced proximately 250 000 pounds of
  metal per day.

• After 1900 the mining industry dropped.
• In 1905, the first discovery of iron ore is
  Buchans River.
• In 1916, the government financed an electric
  smelting plant in St. Johns.

Different Mines in Newfoundland

• Wabana was an open-pit mine which mined
  iron-ore. It closed in June 30, 1966.
• North Star Cement Limited is in Corner Brook and
  is an open-pit mine. It produced shale and gypsum
  and will exist as long as cement is needed.
• Daniels Harbour zinc mine was an open-pit mine
  which produced zinc. It closed in 1985.

• Buchans was an underground mining which produced
  copper, lead, zinc, gold and silver.
• There is now diamond drilling at Buchans.
• There are numerous gold and base metal deposits
  in Nfld. today.

Uses of Minerals in Everyday Life

• Iron is used for cars, building materials,
  airplanes and refrigerators.
• Copper is used for electrical wires and pipes.
• Limestone is used for pulp and paper and cement.

  computers.
• Barite has high quality medical uses such as for
  x-rays and is used as drill mud.
