Title: Chemical Hygiene Training

1
Chemical Hygiene Training
  • Marcy Huey, Lab Safety Manager
  • EHS
  • October 2009

2
Training
  • Chemical Hygiene Training
  • Basic training provided by EHS
  • OSHA Lab Standard Training
  • Laboratory Specific Training
  • Provided by lab supervisor
  • Includes content of lab safety plan

3
Routes Of Exposure
  • Inhalation
  • Absorption
  • Ingestion
  • Injection

4
Effects Of Exposure
  • ACUTE - direct threat that shows up almost
immediately after exposure such as burns from
    contact with a corrosive chemical
  • CHRONIC - usually result from repeated exposure
that occurs over months or years and includes
    cancer and some allergic reactions

5
Protecting Yourself
  • Take measures to protect yourself
  • Laboratory Practice Standard Operating
    Procedures (SOP)
  • Personal Safety
  • Laboratory Controls
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

6
PPE-Eye Protection
  • All lab users, including visitors, must wear ANSI
approved eye protection when potential exists for
    eye injury
  • Contacts may be worn in the lab under appropriate
    eye protection
  • Face shields and/or standing guards must be
available for face or neck protection. Face
shields do not replace the need for eye protection

7
PPE-Protective Clothing
  • Close toed shoes of non-woven material with
    non-slip soles
  • Some areas require steel toed shoes or boots
  • Non-flammable, non-porous aprons
  • when using corrosives
  • Remove before leaving the lab
  • Launder separately

8
PPE-Respiratory Protection
  • Use approved through EHS
  • Must be part of UA Respiratory Protection Program
    this includes
  • Medical Clearance
  • Training
  • Annual Fit test

9
PPE-Gloves
  • Be sure they are compatible
  • with the chemicals involved
  • Remove gloves and wash hands before leaving
  • Inspect before use
  • Clean or discard immediately after use

10
Personal Hygiene
  • No Food, Drink, Beverages
  • No Smoking
  • Do Not Apply Cosmetics
  • Do Not Consume Lab Ice or Deionized Water
  • Wash Hands and Arms Before Leaving Lab
  • Never Pipette by Mouth
  • Do Not Smell or Taste Chemicals
  • Constrain Long Hair and Loose Clothing

11
SOP-Transporting Chemicals
  • Cap All Containers
  • Tightly Sealed, Inside Secondary Containment
  • Ground Metal Containers When Dispensing Flammable
    Liquids

12
SOP-Chemical Labels
  • Maintain Labels on Incoming Containers
  • Replace Torn or Defaced Labels on existing
    containers
  • Label Secondary Containers Immediately
  • Label Content
  • Name of Hazardous Chemical
  • Hazard Warning
  • Name of Responsible Party

13
Lab Practice-Chemical Storage
  • Minimize Storage
  • Discard Chemicals Not Used in Past 2 Years or Not
    Identified for Future Procedures
  • Store Chemicals in Compatible Groups
  • Separate Groups with Barriers
  • Flammables Cabinets gt10 Gal.
  • Closed Cabinets or ¾ Lip
  • Corrosives Below Eye Level
  • Inspect Containers and Labels Weekly
  • Clean out old inventory only maintain active
    chemicals

14
Lab Practice-Housekeeping
  • Keep Chemical Use Areas Free From Contamination
  • Close and Cap All Containers Not in Use
  • Clean Drips and Spillage Off Of Container
    Exterior
  • Maintain the Minimum on the Work Surface
  • Maintain Clear Working Aisles
  • Maintain Clear Access to Fire Extinguishers,
  • Safety Showers and Eyewashes
  • Label Doors that Are Blocked
  • Keep Storage Out of Halls

15
Other Concerns-Compressed Gas Cylinders
  • Installed and Leak Tested by Trained Personnel
  • Secured in an Upright Position
  • Capped When Not In Use
  • Use Compatible Regulator and Auxiliary Equipment
  • EHS has training for the use of gas cylinders

16
Safety EquipmentEyewash and Safety Showers
  • All equipment must meet ANSI Requirements
  • If used, Flush eyes with 15 Minutes of Clear,
    Running Water
  • Operate Eyewash Weekly to maintain lines
  • If Used Seek Medical Attention
  • Tested by EHS annually
  • Maintain Clear Access

17
Engineering ControlsChemical Fume Hood
  • Use For All Operations Where Odoriferous,
Volatile, Toxic or Harmful Release is Possible
  • Assure Hood is Properly Functioning
  • Work at least 6 inches into the hood
  • Elevate Large Apparatus 2 inches
  • Maintain Sash Height At or Below Posted Level
  • Do Not Use the Hood for Storage

18
What About Waste?
  • Waste is a Chemical listed by the Environmental
Protection Agency as a Hazardous Waste
  • A compound or solution that is
  • - Corrosive
  • - Toxic
  • - Reactive
  • - Flammable

19
Unwanted Chemicals
  • The University of Alabama does not maintain
    waste in labs on campus
  • We have unwanted chemicals
  • Collect any chemicals ready for disposal, label
with a completed Unwanted Chemical label, and
    submit pickup request through CEMS
  • Labels and CEMS link on EHS website

20
Unwanted Chemical Containers
  • Collect in clean chemical containers, compatible
    with collected material
  • Containers must have a tight fitting cap that
    will not leak if tipped
  • Keep container exterior free of damage or
    contamination
  • Do not mix incompatible wastes

21
Unwanted Chemical Accumulation
  • Waste must be properly segregated and stored
    according to compatibility
  • Wastes must be stored with a tight fitting cap or
lid and be free from leaks, damage or outside
    contaminants
  • Kept in designated area preferably with
    secondary containment
  • Every container must remain closed except when
    adding waste (in fume hood)
  • When ready for pickup, submit pickup request
    through CEMS at www.bama.ua.edu/ehs

22
  • NO chemicals are to be discharged into the sewer
    system without EHS approval

23
In Use or Waste Chemical Labeling
  • All chemical containers must be properly labeled
with name and hazards of chemical
  • Unwanted chemical labels must be attached to
bottles of unwanted chemicals and name must be
    clear
  • DO NOT use chemical formulas or abbreviations
  • Inspect label integrity and replace if damaged

Last Step!
  • The final step is to take a brief quiz. This
will test your knowledge and understanding of
    this material.
  • Print the quiz, complete it and the information
sheet, and send them (email, fax or campus mail)
  • Marcy Huey
  • Box 870178
  • Fax 348-7773
  • mhuey_at_ua.edu
  • We will send you a certificate for training upon
grading. You must get an 80 for a passing
    grade.
  • Questions call Marcy at 348-5912 or email
    mhuey_at_ua.edu
