Title: Parent meeting Sex and relationships policy
1Parent meetingSex and relationships policy
- Thursday 13th September 2007
2Caring for children
- Within school we meet many standards to ensure
the well being of the children in our care. - This includes all children, whatever their race,
religion, abilities, whatever they think or say
and whatever type of family they come from. - We endeavor to protect them from any kind of
harm, including bullying of any nature.
3DFES 2000
- Our sex and relationship education policy is
based on the DFES document, Sex and
Relationships guidance (2000). - The guidance states that SRE is about,
understanding the importance of marriage for
family life, stable and loving relationships,
respect, love and care. It is also about the
teaching of sex, sexuality and sexual health.
4New legislation
- To meet new guidelines from the government,
schools now must be open to discuss same sex
relationships with children when required. - This does not mean promoting it, but discussing
it when needed at a level appropriate for the
child.
5Code of professional values and practice,
General Teaching Council of England To ensure
the positive development of individual pupils,
teachers work within a framework of equal
opportunities and other relevant legislation,
statutory guidance and school policies. Within
this framework, teachers challenge stereotypes
and oppose prejudice to safeguard equality of
opportunity, respecting individuals regardless of
gender, marital status, religion, colour, race,
nationality, class, sexual orientation,
disability and age
6- Children come from all sorts of families and we
aim to make all these children comfortable to
discuss their home life. - This includes children who come from families
where their parents are in same sex
relationships. - Within our PSHCME lessons, children will be
taught about various different family types, this
may include families where there are two mums or
two dads, in order to teach tolerance,
understanding and respect for others. - Teaching at this school will always be relevant
and appropriate to the age of the child.
7- As part of our equality and inclusion policies,
we are also dedicated to tackle any type of
discrimination against others. - At our school this includes dealing with bullying
of all types, inculding homophobic comments. As
well as tackling children using inappropriate
terms.
8Over three quarters of primary age children
identify the use of the word gay as a way of
attacking or making fun of someone.
9- Calls about homophobic bullying accounted for 27
of the April 2006 calls relating to sexual
orientation issues to ChildLine - Boys account for 55 of the calls in this
category, even though they represent only 25 of
all calls to the helpline - During April 6 of calls relating to sexual
orientation were from under 11s - NSPCC
