Lilienthal was the first person to design a
glider that could fly a person and fly long
distances.

31891 Samuel P. Langley
Langley built a model of a plane called an
aerodrome, which included a steam powered engine.
The model flew, but the full size aerodrome was
too heavy and it crashed.

41903 Orville and Wilbur Wright
On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers Kitty
Hawk Flyer was the first airplane to successfully
fly. It traveled 120 feet in 12 seconds.
