Title: Body Systems II.

1
Body Systems II.
  • Skeletal system

2
What it does
  • There are five major functions to the skeletal
    system
  • 1. provides shape and support
  • 2. enables you to move
  • 3. protects your internal organs
  • 4. produces your blood cells
  • 5. stores certain materials until your body
    needs them

3
Your shape
  • Determined by skeleton like steel frame
    determines shape of building
  • All bones in body are connected to your backbone
    some way
  • Skeleton only weighs in at about 20lbs but can
    support all of you!

4
Get Movin!
  • You can move because your muscles are attached to
the bones and when they contract and pull on the
bones, your able to walk, wave your hand etc
  • Muscles are attached to bone by ligaments

5
Protection and Production
  • Your bones protect your organs
  • Skull covers brain, ribs protect heart and lungs
  • Some bones produce and store important materials
    your body needs
  • As a teenager, only the ends of femurs, your
skull, hip bones and breastbone contain red
marrow that produces red blood cells
  • Bones store minerals like calcium and phosphorus
that can be released when your body needs them

6
Structure and Growth
  • Bones grow through ossification. New cells are
constantly being made until you are an adult to
help you grow taller and your bones grow
    stronger.
  • As an infant the majority of your bones are made
of cartilage. By the time you are an adult the
cartilage has been replaced by bone.
  • Red Marrow is connective tissue inside your bones
    that makes red blood cells.
  • Yellow marrow, stores fat for energy when its
    needed.
  • The periosteum is the connective tissue membrane
that covers the outer layer of the bone except at
    the joints.

1. spongy bone 2. compact bone 3. periosteum 4.
yellow marrow 5. cartilage
7
Jointed skeleton
  • There are many places in our body where bones
come together. These are called joints.
  • There are 2 locations of immovable joints- where
your skull has grown together and where your ribs
attach to your breastbone or sternum
  • There are four types of movable joints in the
    body
  • Ball and socket - like at your hip and shoulder
  • Pivot- where your head attaches to your neck
  • Hinge - ex knees and elbows
  • Gliding -at your wrist and ankles
  • 1. fixed joint 2. pivot joint 3. ball-and-socket
joint 4. sliding joint 5. hinge joint
