    different food groups and the importance of a
    balanced diet.

Why do we need food?
  • To provide us with energy.
  • To give us the materials to grow and to repair
    damaged or worn out tissue.
  • To protect us against disease.

Different food groups
  • Foods rich in fats.
  • Foods rich in carbohydrates.
  • Foods rich in protein.
  • Foods rich in vitamins and minerals

Fats
  • Foods rich in fats provide energy.
  • The energy is used for movement, keeping warm and
    growth.
  • Fatty foods butter, fried food, oils, bacon,
    sausages, cakes and biscuits.

Carbohydrates
  • Foods rich in carbohydrates also provide energy.
  • Carbohydrates can be sugary or starchy (pasta,
    bread, potatoes, rice).
  • Starchy foods are better for you than sweet foods!

Proteins
  • Protein is used for the growth and repair of the
    body.
  • Foods rich in protein include meat, fish, nuts,
    eggs and beans

Vitamins and minerals
  • Vitamins and minerals are needed in small
    amounts, for the body to work properly.
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables are rich in many
    vitamins and minerals.
  • A lack of vitamins and minerals may cause a
    deficiency disease.

Scurvy - a deficiency disease
  • A lack of vitamin C in the diet can cause scurvy
    - bleeding gums, loose teeth, skin rashes and
    poor wound healing. It can be fatal.
  • Vitamin C is found in fresh fruit, especially
    oranges and lemons.
  • Cooking or canning destroys vitamin C.
  • Scurvy used to be common among sailors on long
    voyages and polar explorers - because they
    couldnt get fresh food.

A balanced diet contains a mixture of foods from
all the main food groups.
