3What is ArcGIS
- Latest ESRI software
- Complicated terminology about just what it is
- ArcGIS has three components
- ArcCatalog
- ArcMap
- ArcToolbox
4Licenses
- OK, it has three components
- But there are three levels of license
- ArcView 8
- ArcEditor
- ArcInfo 8
- All three consist of
- ArcCatalog
- ArcMap
- ArcToolbox
5ArcView 8
ArcView provides data visualization, query,
analysis, and integration capabilities along with
the ability to create and edit simple geographic
features
6ArcEditor
ArcEditor, a brand new software product, includes
all the functionality ArcView and adds the power
to create and edit features in a multiuser
geodatabase or coverage.
7ArcInfo 8
ArcInfo includes all the functionality of
ArcEditor and adds advanced geoprocessing
capabilities. ArcSDE adds database services to
the ArcGIS family, while ArcIMS adds Internet
services
8In summary
9Its Scaleable

Projects vs Map Documents
Project
Map Document
Are similar in that both hold all the elements
for a map
Multipledocuments
Only ONEdata frame!
- View
- Theme
- Layout
- Chart
- Avenue scripts

Documents
12ArcView 3.x VS ArcGIS
Theme vs Layer
In 3.x, geographic data is added as themes to a
view. A 8.x Layer is essentially the same thing
as a theme but is arranged a little differently.
You can change layer names and symbolization as
you could for themes.
13ArcView 3.x VS ArcGIS
The Context Menu
- Right clicking on a layer produces the context
menu
When in doupt--
Right Click!!!
14ArcView 3.x VS ArcGIS
View vs. Data Frame
- Nearly the same thing-
- In AV3
- themes of features located in the same geographic
area are displayed in view s. - A view has two parts,
- the TOC and
- the data display
- you can add many views to a project but only one
view can be active at a time.
15ArcView 3.x VS ArcGIS
View vs. Data Frame
- Nearly the same thing-
- In AV 8
- layers of data for the same geographic extent are
grouped in data frames and displayed in ArcMap. - The data frame appears in the Table of Contents
with the layers it contains listed below it. - Many data frames can be added to a map doc but
only one data frame can be active at a time. - The data in the active data frame is the data
drawn in the map display area and the data that
you can work with.

Layouts(3) vs. Layout(8)
- In 3.x, a layout is used to create a map using
data contained in views, charts, tables, etc. - There can be multiple layouts in a 3.x project
- In 8 a layout is composed on a virtual page
- Data is added by using the Insert menu.
- To display more than one map on a layout, you
insert more data frames. - In ArcView 8, each map document has one, and only
one, layout.
19ArcView 3.x VS ArcGIS
Data View vs. Layout View in AV8
- ArcMap provides two ways of viewing a map.
- When you want to explore, display, and query your
data, use Data View, - When you want to prepare a map for output, use
the Layout View so you can add and arrange
elements like legends, north arrows, and scale
bars. - In Layout View you can display more than one data
frame at the same time.

22New Features in 8
- Overview window
- Magnifier window
- Spatial bookmarksplaceholders of geographic
locations and extents that you can zoom to
anytime - Symbol Property Editorallows you to precisely
edit symbols - Style Manageruse to organize and create symbols
and map elements - Multi-layer transparencyallows you to see
through layers - Shared Edit toolyou can simultaneously edit
shared feature boundaries - Metadata Editor
23New Functionality in 8
- On-the-fly projection of features and rasters
- Image reclassification
- Multi-field labelinglabels can be displayed
side-by-side or stacked - Verify button for SQL statements
- Export graphic formatsTIFF, EMF, and PDF
- Dynamically create pyramid files for
rastersenhances performance when working with
large rasters
24On-the-fly projection
- Fantastic improvement!!!!! ?
- BUT you have to know and have recorded the
projection definition for the data being imported!
