  • Describes many different types of behaviour
    ranging from teasing or deliberately leaving
    someone individual out of a social gathering or
    ignoring them, to serious assaults and abuse

Harassment
  • Uninvited and unwanted actions which cause
    offence and/or embarrassment, fear, stress or
    tension. It can be an isolated act like a comment
    or gesture, or it can take the form of repeated
    behaviour against a person

What this means...
  • We do not tolerate any behaviours which make
    another person or group of people feel unhappy,
    uncomfortable or unsafe.
  • Every full-time and part-time student is
    responsible for making sure they or their friends
    do not behave in ways that cause others to feel
    unhappy, uncomfortable or unsafe.

Helping deaf or hearing impaired clients
  • Be aware of any background noises
  • Face your client when speaking
  • Check your understanding by asking questions
  • Repeat things as much as necessary
  • Dont shout or talk too loudly
  • Write down any important information

Helping clients with visual impairments
  • Be aware of differing degrees of sight, less than
    5 of those registered blind have no sight at all
  • Use your clients name to make it clear you are
    speaking to them
  • Describe what is happening
  • Ensure the floor is clear of objects
  • Offer to help your client move about

Helping clients with mobility impairments
  • Keep floors clear of obstacles
  • Do not move walking aids without permission
  • Offer a chair but dont be surprised if it is
    declined!
  • Where appropriate, move from behind counter/desk
    to sit beside wheelchair user
  • Offer to help your client move around

Helping clients with speech and language
difficulties
  • Just because someone has difficulty speaking does
    not mean they will have difficulty understanding
    you
  • Be patient, dont finish your clients sentences!
  • Summarise and ask closed questions to check your
    understanding
  • It might sometimes be useful to ask the person to
    write things down if you are still having
    difficulty understanding them after several
    attempts
