Title: The Scientific Revolution

1
The Scientific Revolution
  • By Margot Reisner, Dami Otepolabello, and
    Sebastian Sangervasi

2
Tycho Brahe
  • Discovered supernova in the constellation of
    Cassiopeia in 1572
  • Inspired King Frederick II of Denmark Norway to
fund an observatory for Tycho Brahe
  • Constructed in 1576 on the island of Hvan.
  • Tycho called it the Uranienborg, fortress of the
    heavens.

3
  • King Frederick II died in 1588
  • The new king withdrew support for Tycho and he
    was removed from his observatory
  • In 1601, Tycho Brahe accumulated most accuate
    pre-telescope astronomical data
  • His data was later used by his assistant Johannes
    Kepler

4
Copernican Universe
  • The earth is one of the planets that rotates
    around the sun
  • Nicholas Copernican
  • His theory the sun is the center of the universe
  • 3 assumptions

5
Galileo Galilei
  • Mathematician
  • First to see the four moons that orbit Jupiter
  • Saw unknown stars
  • Trained the telescope

6
Johannes Kepler
  • Born December 1571, in Wurttemberg Germany
  • Attended University of Tubingen, studied theology
    and the classics
  • Introduced to Copernicus theory of a
    heliocentric universe
  • Gave up being a clergyman, and left Tubingen to
become chair of Astronomy and mathematics in
    Austria

7
  • Kepler devised a complex hypothesis describing
    how the planets are distanced
  • 1596, he published a treatise entitled Mysterium
    Cosmographicum
  • First written defense of Copernicus theory of a
    helocentic universe
  • Tycho Brahe was so impressed with Keplers work
that in 1600 he hired Kepler as an assistant

8
  • Kepler published in 1609 Astronomia Nova
  • included a calculation of the orbit of the planet
    Mars
  • Used the theory that planetary orbits were
    elliptical and not cyclical
  • The Law of Ellipses
  • The Equal-Areas Law
  • The Harmonic Law

9
Telescope
  • Galileo was the first person to use the telescope
    to seriously study the heavens
  • Hans Lippershey

10
Sir Isaac Newton
December 25, 1642 - March 31,1727
  • If I have been able to see further, it was only
because I stood on the shoulders of giants

11
  • Attended Trinity college in Cambridge
  • Studied Aristotle and Plato
  • Got Bachelors degree in April 1665
  • Became a professor in Cambridge in 1669
  • Elected president of royal society in 1703
  • Knighted in 1705

12
Accomplishments
  • Gravity
  • Mass vs. Weight
  • Trinity Bridge
  • Planets orbit shapes
  • Absolute Motion
  • The newton

13
Written Work
  • Quaestiones Quadam Philosaphicae (1649)
  • Principia (1687)
  • Amicus Plato, Amicus Aristotle, magis amica
veritas-Plato is my friend, Aristotle is my
friend, but truth is my best friend
  • De Analysi per Aequationes numeri terminorum
    infinitas Analysis by infinite series
  • Of Colours (during time of black death)

14
3 Laws of Motion
  • Inertia A body remains in a state of rest until
it is compelled to change by an outside force
  • Force Law Change in motion is proportional to
    the force impressed on it
  • Action and Reaction For every action, there is
    an equal opposite reaction

15
The Scientific Method
  • Frances Bacon inductive reasoning
  • Galileo testing method
  • Descartes four laws of reasoning
  • Boyle teleology
  • Hooke science improved society
  • Newton four new rules for reasoning
