Are Results Representative Response Rate by Rank

Rationale for Vote
  • 2 questions/ 3 possible responses Nine possible
    combinations
  • Condensed to five types of voters
  • 275 (58.4) Emphatic YES (yes/yes)
  • 78 (16.6) Emphatic NO (no/no)
  • 71 (15.1) Statement first confidence later
    (yes/no, yes/ no op)
  • 20 (4.2) Statement too weak (no/yes)
  • 23 (4.9) Apathetic/ambivalent (no op/no op, no
    op/no, no/no op, no op/yes)

8
Emphatic Yes
  • The faculty needs to express its disapproval of
Adams and initiate the process to remove him from
    office.
  • . It is imperative that Senate respond with
statement drawn from faculty. If not we are
essentially saying we dont care if our voice is
    heard.
  • Adams was a poor choice for president, selected
for reasons having little to do with legitimate
academic concerns. He has proven to be utterly
indifferent to the faculty he claims to lead . .
. Unfamiliar with needs and priorities of a major
    research university

9
Emphatic Yes (cont.)
  • Too many issues to mention Harrick/Cole, Costa
    Rica, nepotism, compensation, Ohio State,
chartered jets, bonuses, lack of communication,
takes credit when times are good/ disappears when
times are bad. For me, the Dooley situation is a
NON-ISSUE in light of the above.

10
People who spent last 7 months at new Ecolodge in
Costa Rica
  • He is our leader and our boss. To function
properly he must have our confidence. Events not
of our doing have brought our confidence of him
into question. (Vote of confidence) will be an
enormous boost to get him back on track.

11
Emphatic No
  • . a nationwide perception that the evaluation
of Adams is .. conflict between athletics and
academics. Any statement by the College faculty
    will be so construed
  • . . . . It is not only inappropriate but
politically unwise for the faculty to be drawn
    into this witchhunt
  • Not now. We have Adams where we want him . . He
is trying to please the faculty especially in
matters of capping enrollment and faculty
development. Give him a chance and see how he
does. If he hasnt shown leadership in next
three months, then that will be time for a vote.

12
Emphatic No (Cont.)
  • This is a qualified no. . . Facultys ground
for such a vote would have to be on academic
grounds . . . The academic standing of UGA
continues to improve in some highly visible ways
(e.g. Rhodes scholars, Marshall scholars, a
    MacArthur fellow) . . . . Going after president
on other grounds . . . After taking beating in
press over them . . . Will make us look like a
    bunch of rabble-rousers.

13
Statement First Confidence Later
  • The timing is not right for such a vote. The
president is currently lobbying on our behalf at
the state legislature and a vote of no confidence
    would alienate him . . .
  • No not yet. If after the President has been
made clearly aware of faculty concerns, he makes
no timely effort to address those concerns, I
think a no-confidence vote would be the
    appropriate next step.
  • I personally believe Adams has lost confidence
of both faculty and alumni. I believe he should
go. vote would make it difficult to recruit .
successor. Who would want to take over an
institution if . vote would cripple you whenever
    faculty disapproved .

14
Statement too Weak
  • I think its time that the faculty be heard on
this issue. In contrast to the statement
option, this vote would say where we stand in
    fairly unambiguous terms.
  • 1. This would be a mere gesture, typical for
institutional bodies, but too weak in the real
world 2. This would be saying something of
    substance.
  • With all due respect, the Faculty Senate has
taken far too long to reach this point. Lets
    vote (2) and move on!

15
Non-committal/Ambivalent
  • Toward what end? As a faculty member of the
college I am not charged with hiring, firing or
providing a performance appraisal of President
    Adams
  • I do not have strong feelings about the
leadership abilities of President Adams or the
worth of a vote of confidence/no-confidence
  • The senate never let us voice an opinion before,
why now? (football anger, I fear)
