ESZTERGOM

• The name of the town, Esztergom, is the Hungarian
  variant of the medieval Latin name Strigonium,
  which derives from the combination of the words
  Ister (the greek name of the Danube) and grandus
  (the name of the river Garam in the Latin).

• It was in this region that Prince Géza laid the
  foundations of the later royal seat. The
  construction of the castle and the palace began
  in the 970s.
• The town was destoyed by invading Mongols, in
  1241-1242, but they could not take the castle.

• Two years after the occupation of Buda, the Turks
  captured the town of Esztergom. (1543)
• During the Turkish occupation of Hungary,
  Esztergom was the seat of sanjak.
• In the 19th century Archbishhop Rudnay moved to
  Esztergom and completed Basilika in 1856.

• Now Basilika is one of the most monumental
  relics of Hungarian Classicism.
• Nearly 100 meters high cross-topped dome altered
  the sight not only of Esztergom but also of the
  whole area.

• Other Classicist bulildings erected at the same
  time include other church bulidings, the first
  place of primate, the Church of Saint Anne, the
  prebendal bulidings, public buildings and Town
  -houses.

• The stretch of the Danube in Hungary runs for 417
  km, of whitch 240 km forms the common border with
  Slovakia.
• Esztergoms Slovakian city neighbour is Sturovo.
• In Esztergom, there is a festival in the summer,
  when people decorate their ships with laps,
  lampions, row slowly in the river after dark,
  and show them to the public.

• There is a bridge betveen Esztergom and Sturovo.
• It is called Bridge Mária Valeria.
• It was completely rebuilt in 2000.

• The Bajcsy- Zsilinszky street is the main road in
  the citythere are lot of shops, old houses and
  the Saint Stephans swimming pool.

• The Town Hall in Széchenyi square, rebuilt from
  the house of Kuruts General János Bottyán in
  1770-1773.
