Collection of artworks showing San Francesco and the birds. Although the birds had no soul, Frances yet urged them to praise their Creator. After the sermon he decided that animals, as part of Creation, should be honoured and included in his evangelical mission. This scene with the birds is also important to his followers because it represents how St. Francis and his order preached to the poor.
Collection of artworks by Gauger Pierre Lucien, Bruce Armstrong, Irena Zabrocka, Michal Gabriel, Starr Kempf, Steve Hazlett, Ting Shao Kuang and others. Birds are synonymous with flight, and as such are a potent symbol and embodiment of many of humanity’s hopes and dreams. They connote both the human and the divine spirit through their soaring freedom of movement, and their linking of earth and sky (often also water). Birds can represent our souls, or stand for wisdom and the power of thought. They have visual beauty, make music, hold the secrets of the universe (‘a little bird told me’) and as we know, birds can be symbols of transcendence. In ancient times in Western culture, it was also a common belief that birds were messengers from a heavenly plane, and they soared down to earth with important messages

Elise Macdonald was born in Zimbabwe in 1954. She studied art at the University of Witswatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, from which she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine art in 1975. She then began experimenting with airbrush and, in 1982, had a sold-out exhibition of airbrush paintings at Crake Gallery, Johannesburg. After moving to Knysna in 1996, Elise Macdonald exhibited her work at Trent Read’s gallery, Knysna Fine Art. During this period, her art output dwindled as her time and energy were taken up by motherhood. Once her nest emptied, she rekindled her passion for painting, this time with brushes and oils.
Jorge Valdivia Carrasco was born (1950) in Ayacucho, Peru, and has been living in Germany for over three decades. Since a very young age he became interested in painting and has always dedicated himself professionally to this activity. He evolved as artist in a permanent searching for his own expression, and reached a quality level which allowed him to enter the UNESCO International Association of Plastic Arts, located in Paris.

Ilias Atwani’s passion for photography has taken him places. One of such instances is the opportunity of visiting two Inuit villages with Noah, a local resident as a reward for winning a photography contest called The Art of Mining. Noah even took Ilias on a snowmobile expedition and invited him to his place afterwards. Ilias Atwani met and inquired about two girls at Noah’s home and was told that the mother of one of the girls worked for his company, and that Noah’s family watched over the girl in her mother’s absence. It was that particular moment that made Ilias realize how much mutual aid and community synergy was there at the heart of Inuit culture.
The Art of Mining contest challenged photographers in mining communities to capture images that depicted one of three themes: community engagement, environmental stewardship, or health and safety. Ilias Atwani won the competition in the year 2015. Ilias and the second-place winner were rewarded with a personalized tour of two Inuit villages.
