8Renowned South Carolina carver and artist
Grainger McKoy (born 1947) grew up in Sumter, and
attended Clemson University, earning a degree in
zoology, while also studying architecture. After
graduating, McKoy apprenticed for eighteen months
with the renowned bird carver Gilbert Maggioni in
Beaufort. McKoy initially produced realistic
carvings, but slowly began transforming his
intricately carved birds into gravity-defying
sculptures that played with form and space, while
continuing to accurately render each species in
detail.
9Unlike most traditional bird carvers, McKoy and
Maggioni sought extreme realism, inserting
individual wood feathers rather than carving them
out from an existing block.
10The sculpture of Grainger McKoy defies
classification. Though a living artist, McKoy
does not operate within the circles of
contemporary art or the gallery scene. He carves,
burns, and manipulates wood with woodworkers
tools, yet his handiwork is rendered with the
passion and expertise of a fine art sculptor.

McKoy sculpture subject of Christmas ornament
44Renowned sculptor, Grainger McKoy began creating
small sculptures of his larger work and casting
them into jewelry in the mid-1990s. What started
as a Christmas gift for his wife, Floride, has
grown into a 40-piece collection that includes
fine silver, men's gifts and accessories, and of
course, women's jewelry.

called vacuum casting to retain the fine detail
of each feather
