2A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE THAILAND BURMA BORDER
- 1984 The First Refugees
- In 1984 the Burmese launched a massive offensive,
which broke through the Karen National Union
(KNU) front lines , sending about 10,000
refugees into Thailand. - The refugees remained in Thailand.
3- Forced Village Relocations
- since 1996Once the Burmese Army began taking
control of former ethnic territory it launched a
massive relocation plan aimed at, bringing the
population under military control. - It is estimates that in 2005 there were at least
540,000 IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) in
the Eastern States
4Refugee camp
5- Taipei Overseas Peace Service-TOPS has cooperated
with the Karen Womens Organization-KWO to
implement the Early Childhood Development-ECD
Project in 3 refugee camps. It assisted 4,000
children and 200 care givers in 35 nursery
schools in Tak province, Thialand. - TOPS also worked with Burmese Migrant Worker
Education Committee-BMWEC to support pre-school
education and care for migrant children.

21TOPS has been creating a better inclusive
learning-friendly environment through the
development of Nursery Teacher Manual and 6 ECD
Booklet subjecting diverse aspects for young
children. The training workshops arranged by TOPS
and partner groups went on fruitfully, and the
early childhood care centered training concepts
have the positive feedbacks from all participants.
22- Nursery Teacher Training Workshops in 3 camps
have been conducted. There were in average 350
teachers participated in each term workshop. - Teacher training workshops for Burmese migrant
school teachers have been conducted. Averagely
there were 50 teachers came from 40 migrant
schools in each training workshop.
23- ECD Newsletters in Karen and Burmese language
versions have been produced and distributed to
nursery teachers inside/outside camp and local
partner organizations (KWO BMWEC) by hard copy
and electronic file.
