AORTA

2
ABDOMINAL AORTA
  • Passes through the abdominal cavity through the
aortic hiatus in the diaphragm to become the
    abdominal aorta.
  • Ends in considerably diminished size of 1.75 cm.
in diameter opposite the lower border of the 4th
lumbar vertebra and divides into right and left
    common iliac artery.

3
VENTRAL BRANCHES
  • Coeliac- 1st branch of the abdominal aorta, is
2-3 cm long and branches into
  • 1) Splenic artery- runs superior to the
pancreas, enters splenic hilum, supplies pancreas
    and spleen.
  • 2) Left gastric artery- supplies the stomach
  • 3) Common Hepatic Artery- supplies 20 of
blood to liver, enters the porta hepatis w/
    portal vein.

7
Superior Mesenteric Artery
  • 2nd branch of the abdominal aorta.
  • Lies posterior to the body of the pancreas and
anterior to the aorta in the transverse section.
  • Supplies the small intestine, ascending colon,
    part of the transverse colon.

9
Proximal Aorta-Transverse

10
Renal Arteries
  • There are 2 renal arteries, right and left renal
    artery.
  • Right renal artery is the only vessel that runs
posterior to the inferior vena cava.

11
Aorta Transverse Renal Arteries

12
Inferior Mesenteric Artery
  • Originates from the abdominal aorta close to the
umbilicus at the level of the 3rd or 4th lumbar
vertebra and rarely seen on ultrasound.
  • Supplies the transverse, descending, and sigmoid
    colon and rectum.

13
Iliac Arteries
  • Common iliac arteries branches into right and
left internal and external iliac arteries.
  • Internal iliac artery enter the pelvis supplying
the uterus, prostate, pelvic muscles and other
    pelvic organ.
  • External iliac artery continues distally and
becomes common femoral artery below the inguinal
    ligament.
