HEALTH OF INMATES
  • Primary Health Care
  • All centres follow the primary health care model
    of the Department of Health.
  • All offenders have access to health care daily
    and will be referred for specialist care if
    needed.
  • Sixty percent of our health care staff is trained
    in primary health care and we have at least one
    primary health care practitioner at each
    Correctional Centre.
  • Tuberculosis is managed according to the
    guidelines of the Department of Health.

  • Challenges in Primary Health Care
  • With overcrowding we are exposed to risks such as
    communicable/infectious diseases and mental
    conditions.
  • We lack the necessary infrastructure to practice
    primary health care 100.
  • Primary health care practitioners must still be
    trained to dispense medication.

  • To have health information and education sessions
    weekly at all correctional centres.
  • To equip clinics with the basic equipment to
    deliver primary health care services in full.
