Definition
  • What is Aversion Therapy?
  • A conditioning therapy that uses pharmacueticals,
chemical substances, media, or physical force to
induce negative sensations such as nasaeu and
vomiting. Aversion Therapy is usually used to
cure addictions to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes
    ect.
  • Aversion therapy is a type of behavior
modification in which a patient is subjected
negative physical stimuli to lessen or
    exterminate unwanted addictions or behaviors

    vomiting

    and painful noises

autism or who are developmentally challenged and
    prone to misconduct
  • Practices Aversion Therapy
  • Benny Walker is a mentally retarded and autistic
child that has been placed in the Judge Rotenberg
Educational Center. He has displayed over his
life violent and disturbing behavior towards
others and himself. He undergoes Aversion Therapy
which includes shock therapy or a restriction of
    food or rewards

Spare the rod spoil the child?
  • New Zealand Drury Christian School enforces
corporal punishment by the parents only in severe
cases and after a conference with the parents and
the students. This school faces challenges from
    Parliament.
  • North Carolina schools still enforce corporal
punishment in elementary as well as high schools
  • Parents are now facing the threat of a No
    Spanking movement on April 30
  • Corporal punishment in schools is illegal in 23
states and is illegal all together in several
    countries in Europe

6
Aversion Therapy in Pop Culture
  • Aversion therapy often has a negative stigma and
is the topic of several movies and dystopian
    novels such as
  • -Clockwork Orange
  • -1984
  • -One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
  • -Quitters Inc.
  • -Brave New World
  • -Saw series

7
Homosexuality and Aversion Therapy
  • -Aversion Therapy was and still is used to try to
    cure homosexuality since the 1950s
  • - Men were shown erotic images and given emetine
to induce vomiting, beaten, isolated or
humiliated to attempt to make them associate
    homosexuality with negative feelings
  • -After several weeks or months the patients were
also urged to pick up prostitutes and consumate
  • - Some patients experienced extreme side effects
from the drugs given, others died due to
unrelated health problems that were left
uninvestigated and the rest suffered emotional
distress during the rest of their life.

8
AversionTherapy in Prison
  • Aversion therapy is now being tested on sex
    offenders, pedophiles and prisoners with
    homicidal tendencies
  • -many parents whose children are imprisoned want
prisons to offer aversion therapy as an
    alternative to incarceration
  • -A large majority of feminists support this
because they believe its a positive approach
that allows society to fix not ignore its
problems, Nell Noddings ethical caring would also
    seem to support this

Aversion Therapy and
11
Critisims
  • -Aversion Therapy starts with the assumptions of
Utilitarianism and Egoism so it reduces human
motivation to what is pleasurable and what will
    benefit us
  • - It lacks respect for the human body and
undermines free will as well as disregarding the
physical affects of the treatment for the results
    or the consequences
  • -Most that oppose Aversion Therapy simply state
that it unethical because it is inflicting pain
    upon yourself
  • -Others who fiercely oppose Aversion Therapy do
so because they feel that extending it towards
the mentally challenged and children undermine
their natural rights a principle found in our
Declaration of Independence and the writings of
    Locke and Kant
