Title: Protapers
1Protapers.an edge ahead of 0.02 Taper.
2Basic introduction
- Protaper is a based on a unique concept and
comprised of just 6 endodontic instruments, made
up of NICKEL TITANIUM. - It consists of 3-shaping files and 3-finishing
files. - It was designed by
- Dr Cliff Ruddle
- Dr John West
- Dr Pierre Machtou.
3- The cross section of Protaper is a modified
K-type of design with sharp cutting edge and no
radial lands. This creates a stable core and
sufficient flexibility for smaller files, though
the cross section of finishing files is slightly
relieved for increased stability.
4Unique design factors are.
- Varying tapers along the long axis of the
instrument. - The three shaping files have tapers that
increases coronally and reverse pattern is seen
in finishing files. - Color coding.
- Currently lengths available are 21 mm 25 mm.
- Available as hand as well as rotary endodontic
files.
5Hand Protaper
Rotary Protaper
6Shaping files.
- There are 3-shaping files , S1, S2 Sx.
- S1 is the shaping file-one, purple colour.
- S2 is the shaping file-two, white colour.
- Sx is the shaper x or auxillary shaper, golden
colour. - The taper of all the shaping files increases
coronally.
7Finishing Files.
- There are 3-finishing files, F1,F2 F3.
- F1 is the finishing file one, yellow coloured ,
Do diameter is 0.20 mm. - F2 is the finisher file two, red coloured , D0
diameter is 0.25 mm - F3 is the finisher three ,blue coloured ,D0
diameter is 0.30 mm. - The taper increases apically.
- .Newer addition is F4 ( 40 mm) ,F5( 50 mm) , F6
( 60 mm )..
8S 1 ( Shaper one )
- Shaping File one.
- Purple coloured.
- D0 diameter is 0.17 mm D14 diameter is 1.20 mm
- Prepares coronal 1/3rd of the canal.
- Non cutting modified guided tip.
- There are 12 increasing tapers along the length
of the blade.

10S 2 ( Shaper two )
- Shaping file two.
- White coloured.
- D0 diameter is 0.20 mm D14 diameter is 1.20mm.
- Prepares middle 1/3rd of the canal.
- Non cutting modified guided tip.
- There are 9 increasing tapers.

12Sx ( Shaper X / auxillary shaper)
- Shaper X / Auxillary shaper.
- Golden coloured handle.
- D0 diameter is 0.20 D14 diameter is 1.20mm.
- It is used to do coronal flaring in the same way
as done with GG drills i.e. cutting in out
strokes. - There is an aggressive cutting tip.
- There is a much faster rate of taper from D0 to
D9 as compared to S1 S2 , i.e. at D6,D7,D8,D9
the CS diameter is 0.50,0.70,90,1.10
respectively.

- Finishing file one.
- Yellow in colour.
- Used for finishing of apical 1/3rd
- D0 diameter is 0.20 mm.
- Between D0-D3 F1 has a fixed taper of 7 percent.

16F 2 ( Finisher File Two )
- Finishing file two.
- Red in colour.
- Used in preparation of apical 1/3rd
- Do diameter is 0.25 mm.
- Between D0-D3 F2 has a fixed taper of 8 percent.

18F 3 ( Finishing file three )
- Finishing file three.
- Red in colour.
- Used in the preparation of apical 1/3rd.
- D0 diameter is 0.30 mm.
- Between D0-D3 , F3 has a fixed diameter of 9
percent.
