Post War of 1812
  • U.S. did not gain territory as a result of the
    war
  • Patriotism grows in the country
  • For first time, population sees themselves as
    Americans
  • Manufacturing is growing
  • Because of embargoes and naval blockades, the
    country had begun to produce own products

Weaknesses
  • Financial System-
  • Bank of the United States had not been
    re-chartered in 1811
  • Government had to borrow from state banks
  • Money had been printed beyond amount of specie
  • Some banks would not accept money from other
    states

  • Transportation System-
  • Merchants have problem getting goods to market
  • Land routes had to be used that were slow and
    expensive
  • Products become scarce

Changes in Philosophy
  • Democratic-Republicans (now called Republicans)
    are calling for strong national government
  • They want to promote manufacturing, strengthen
    the financial system, and improve transportation
  • They call for balanced economy of manufacturing,
    agriculture, and commerce

Second National Bank
  • 1816
  • Pres. Madison speaks in support of consideration
    of a national bank
  • John C. Calhoun introduces a bill to charter the
    Second Bank of the United States
  • Madison signs the bill

Tariff Act of 1816
  • U.S. manufacturers are unable to compete with
    British made products
  • Protective tariff is passed
  • 25 duty is put on imported factory goods
  • Supported by industrialists in the North, opposed
    by importers and Southern planters

Roads and Canals
  • In 1811, construction had begun on the National
    Road
  • By 1819, it reached as far as Wheeling, Va
  • In 1817, work begins on Erie Canal
  • After completion, it links Lake Erie with Hudson
    River in New York
  • These internal improvements began to bring the
    country together and promote trade

Election of 1816
  • Madison will not run for reelection
  • Democratic-Republicans will nominate James Monroe
    of Va. with Daniel Tompkins as VP
  • Federalists do not formally nominate a candidate
  • Leading Federalist is Rufus King
  • Monroe wins by 183-34

  • 1817- Rush-Bagot Agreement
  • Nations agree to limit the military presence on
    the Great Lakes
  • Convention of 1818
  • Border between U.S. and Canada is set at 49th
    parallel
  • Oregon Country is to be jointly occupied for ten
    years, and then a boundary is to be set

Spain
  • 1812- U.S. had incorporated West Florida
  • 1818- Andrew Jackson goes into East Florida to
    fight Seminoles who had been aiding slaves
  • He claims territory for U.S.
  • John Quincy Adams tells Spain to control
    Seminoles or give Florida to U.S.
  • 1819- Adams-Onis Treaty sells Florida to U.S.
  • Also sets boundary of Louisiana Purchase

Monroe Doctrine
  • Former Spanish colonies in Latin America have
    independence movements
  • America recognizes these new republics
  • 1823- Monroe states that there should be no
    future colonization of the Americas
  • We are different than Europe, republics instead
    of monarchies
  • U.S. would consider any attack on these nations
    an attack on our country
  • U.S. will not interfere with European affairs
