Title: WAN Overview Pg 1

1
WAN Overview Pg 1
  • Three regional Hubs will be established at the
District Office/Data Center, Service Center, and
    Shaw Butte Elementary School.
  • Each District Hub location will house a regional
network management host to support its area. The
management scheme for the data portion of the
network will be based on the Simple Network
    Management Protocol (SNMP) standards. All
routers will be pointed to the master Network
Management host for the purpose of downloading
    new or existing configurations.
  • Each District Hub location will contain a DNS
server to support the individual schools serviced
out of that location. Each school site will also
contain a host for DNS and e-mail services (local
post office) that will maintain a complete
directory of all staff personnel and student
    population for that location.

WAN Overview Pg 2
  • The update DNS process will flow from the
individual school server to the Hub server and to
    the district server.
  • All Internet connectivity will be supplied
through the District Office with the District
Office being the single point of contact for all
schools and organizations within the district.
The Washington School District WAN will connect
all school and administrative offices with the
district office for the purpose of delivering
    data.

3
Washington Project The Two-Layer Hierarchical
Model
  • The Washington School District WAN will be based
on a two-layer hierarchical model. Three regional
Hubs will be established - one each at the
District Office/Data Center, the Service Center,
and Shaw Butte Elementary School - in order to
form a fast WAN core network.

Traffic will flow as shown here.
6
Point-to-Point Protocol
  • PPP will be used on all connections that run
between LANs. ISDN will be used to connect a
community school to the autonomous network. Frame
Relay will be used on the connection to the
    internet from the autonomous network.
  • The encapsulation type is set on all the
    point-to-point connections as encapsulation ppp.
Also the authentication is set to chap with an
encryption strength of 0. The password for all
the schools is the name of the central office
plus the letters co at the end
  • The encapsulation type is set on all
    point-to-point between central offices a
encapsulation ppp. Also the authentication is set
to chap with an encryption strength of 0. The
password is datacenterco just like the schools.

10
Why PPP is better than HDLC
  • PPP is better suited for the job than HDLC
because it provides better connectity and better
reliability than HDLC. It also supports
connectivity for upper layer protocols such as
    DHCP, DNS, HTTP and TCP.

11
How Frame Relay Will Be Inserted Into The WAN
  • Frame Relay will be used on the T1 link to the
Internet Service Provider. Frame Relay is better
used on this link than on the other links because
it provides a low latency connection straight to
    the Internet.
