• Most of Marc's mature work portrays animals,
  usually in natural settings. His work is

  and a profound sense of emotion, which garnered
  notice in influential circles even in his own

• The great German painter Franz Marc may be
  regarded as one of the originators of modern art.
  With his friend Kandinsky he founded the Blue
  Rider' group, and together they propounded new
  ideas subscribed to by the avant-garde of
  European painters, including Picasso, Braque and
  Delaunay.
• Man plays only a small part in Marc's work he
  wrote that the irreligious humanity which lived
  all around me did not excite my true feelings,
  whereas the virgin feeling for life of the animal
  world set alight everything good in me.' Animals,
  particularly horses, are central in his work at
  first they are symbols of nature, but later they
  become the messengers of a higher spiritual
  world.

  spiritual. Yellow is the female principle,
  gentle, gay and spiritual. Red is matter, brutal
  and heavy and always the colour to be opposed and
  overcome by the other two.

In March 1916 he was killed instantly when he was
struck in the head by a shell splinter.

What to do now

• Look through all of Marcs work, pick one which
  you think is most similar in terms of content,
  style and colour to your own final piece, or what
  you want your own final piece to look like, save
  it, if possible print it.
• Make a full colour copy of it.
• Make copies of detailed sections of it
• Fully explain what you think the picture means.
  Make comprehensive notes on the picture, using
  the How to write about Art sheets from the Art
  teacher.
• Show a Development of ideas for your own piece of
  work. Pay particular attention to the underlying
  meaning of your piece. What characteristics does
  your animal portray? What do the colours convey?
  Pay attention to the background and the Cubist
  style. Experiment with fragmentation and
  different viewpoints. Be daring!
• Fully evaluate your piece of work.
