• Ibn Masud rashy Allahu anhu reports that the
  Prophet peace be upon him said, The Quran has
  been revealed upon seven ways of recitation.
  Every verse there from has an explicit meaning
  and an implicit one. And for every limit there is
  a different method of derivation. (for the
  explicit meaning the knowledge of Arabic grammar
  and for the implicit the skill of ijtihad)

• Aisha radhy Allahu anha was asked regarding the
  verse, Surely Safa and Marwa are from the
  symbols of Allah, so whoever makes hajj of the
  kabah or performs umrah, there is no harm if he
  makes tawaf (say) of them that there is no harm
  if a person does not make say. Aisha radhy
  Allahu anha said, Never! If what you claim was
  correct it would have been, there is no harm if
  he does not make tawaf of them This verse was
  revealed regarding the Ansar who used to worship
  Manat and it was on Safa, thus they felt
  uncomfortable making say. So they asked the
  Prophet about it and Allah revealed these verses.

• Urwah radhy Allahu anhu substantiated his claim
  by using the explicit meaning of the verse.
• Aisha radhy Allahu anha pointed out a subtle
  indication in the text that alluded that the
  explicit meaning is not meant, instead the
  meaning of the verse depends on the background of
  its revelation.
• This indicates different levels in understanding
  texts.

• Ibn Masud radhy Allahu anhu reports regarding the
  virtues of the Sahaba that they were the best of
  this Ummah, most righteous spiritually, most
  deepest in knowledge and the least formal.

• Ali radhy Allahu anhu was asked, Do you have any
  knowledge that is not contained in the Quran?
• He replied, No, except for a special
  understanding that Allah endows a person within
  the Quran.

• Zaid Ibn Thabit reports that Abu Bakr called me
  on the day the Battle of Yamamah ended and Umar
  was next to him. Abu Bakr said to me, Umar came
  to me and said that many qurra have been martyred
  and I fear that the parts of the Quran may be
  lost if this carries on, so I think you should
  order the compilation of the Quran. I said to
  him, how could I do something that the Prophet
  peace be upon him did not do? Umar swore and said
  that it is better and he kept on insisting until
  Allah opened up my heart for it and adopted the
  opinion of Umar
