• Watch for overgeneralizations and sweeping
  conclusions
• Ex John is the only Gospel that shows Gods
  love.  John is the place we get all our
  Christian theology.
• Statements without examples Cite evidence of
  your thought flow.
• Opinions vs. facts
• Misunderstanding the assignment
• Ex  Many students forgot to write about how
  reading John in one sitting was different.  I
  gave grace here because I could implicitly see it
  at places in their papers.

Debriefing over 1st Reading John
Finally, some textual issues 1.  Confusion over
Jesus statement to Nicodemus about being born
of water 2.  Confusion also over what baptism
is. More than getting wet. 3. Not recognizing
that we understand many things that the crowds
and disciples missed b/c we view Scripture
through the lens of the Cross.  The disciples
werent dumb they were just looking for
something very different than how Jesus was
redefining Messiah and salvation. 4.  Eternal
life We have a very Western, modern definition
for the word and are not asking what eternal life
meant to the audiences of Jesus and the hearers
of Johns gospel.
