Title: The Birth, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ:
1The Birth, Death and Resurrection of Jesus
Christ
2The Birth of Jesusin Bethlehem of Judea
- Foretold by the prophet Micah
- Micah 52 You O BETHLEHEM Ephrathah, though you
are small among the clans of JUDAH, out of you
will come for me one who will be ruler over
ISRAEL.
3Jesus was the Lion of Judah
- Genesis 499-10-You are a lion's cub, O Judah
you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he
crouches and lies down, like a lioness--who dares
to rouse him? The sceptre will not depart from
Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his
feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the
obedience of the nations is his.
4Prophecy that Jesus was the long awaited Messiah
- Isaiah 9 6-7 For to us a child is born, to us
a son is given, and the government will be on his
shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful
Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace. - Of the increase of his government and peace there
will be no end. He will reign on David's throne
and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding
it with justice and righteousness from that time
on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.
5The Virgin Birth was Foretold by Isaiah
- Isaiah 714 The Lord himself will give you a
sign. The Virgin will be with child and will
give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel
(God with us).
6 Luke 226 The angel Gabriel told Mary You
will be with child and give birth to a son. You
are to give him the name Jesus.
- How will this be, Mary asked the angel since
I am a virgin? - The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the
power of the Most High will overshadow you. So
the holy one will to be born will be called the
Son of God.
7Signs in the Sky marking the Birth of Jesus
- The stars showed the constellation Virgo
"birthing" the new moon. - The star Regulus circled Jupiter (The
King planet) 3 times signifying the coronation
of the KING. - The triple conjunction took place at a new
moon marking the Jewish New Year Rosh
Hashana. - It took place within Leo, showing a
connection with the Jewish tribe of - Judah (and prophecies of the
Jewish Messiah).
8The Star of Bethlehem
- Signified birth.
- Signified kingship.
- It had a connection with the Jewish nation.
- It rose in the east, like other stars.
- It appeared at a precise time.
- Herod didn't know when it appeared, only expert
Magi astronomers. - It lasted for several months.
- It was ahead of the Magi as they went south
from Jerusalem -
to Bethlehem.
9Who were the Wise Men?
- The Magi may have been Jewish wise men or
astronomers descended from Jews living in
Babylon during the Exile. - They were probably familiar with Daniels
prophecy - Daniel 925 "Know and understand this From the
issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild
Jerusalem until the Anointed One, (Messiah) the
ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and
sixty-two 'sevens.' It will be rebuilt with
streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.26
After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed One
will be cut off and will have nothing. (crucified)
10Amazingly Revelation 121-5 describes the
celestial picture
- A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven a
woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under
her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was
about to give birth. Then another sign appeared
in heaven an enormous red dragon with seven
heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his
heads. (Satan) His tail swept a third of the
stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.
The dragon stood in front of the woman who was
about to give birth, so that he might devour her
child the moment it was born. She gave birth to a
son, a male child, who will rule all the nations
with an iron sceptre...
11Eye Witness Accounts of the Death and
Resurrection The Gospels and Pauls Letters
- These were written by the disciples and apostles,
- each from a slightly different perspective
12The Trials of Jesus (Luke 2266-71, 231-25)
- Jesus was tried for
- blasphemy by the Jewish leaders, for saying He
was the Son of God. - by King Herod.
- Pilate, the Roman Governor, for sedition i.e.
for saying He was the King of the Jews. - He was scourged and crucified.
13The Scourging was brutal and prolonged
14Jesus was too weak from the scourging to to carry
His cross
- As they led Him away, they seized Simon from
Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country,
and put the cross on him and made him carry it
behind Jesus. (Luke 2326)
15Isaiahs Prophecy about the Crucifixion (Isaiah
53 1-5)
Who has believed our message and to whom has the
arm of the LORD been revealed? He grew up before
him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of
dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to
attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that
we should desire him. He was despised and
rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar
with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their
faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he took up our infirmities and carried
our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by
God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was
pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed
for our iniquities the punishment that brought
us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are
healed.
16- Crucifixion was designed to cause maximum pain
and suffering
17Davids Prophetic and Graphic Description of the
Crucifixion in Psalm 22
But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men
and despised by the people. All who see me mock
me they hurl insults, shaking their heads "He
trusts in the LORD let the LORD rescue him. Let
him deliver him, since he delights in him..... Do
not be far from me, for trouble is near and there
is no one to help. Many bulls surround me strong
bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions
tearing their prey open their mouths wide against
me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones
are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax it
has melted away within me. My strength is dried
up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the
roof of my mouth you lay me in the dust of
death. Dogs have surrounded me a band of evil
men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands
and my feet. I can count all my bones people
stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments
among them and cast lots for my clothing.
(verses 6- 18)
18Isaiahs Prophecy about the Crucifixion (Isaiah
53 6- 9)
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us
has turned to his own way and the LORD has laid
on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed
and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth he
was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a
sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did
not open his mouth. By oppression and judgment
he was taken away. And who can speak of his
descendants? For he was cut off from the land of
the living for the transgression of my people he
was stricken. He was assigned a grave with the
wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he
had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his
mouth.
19Isaiahs Prophecy about the Crucifixion (Isaiah
53 10-12)
Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and
cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes
his life a guilt offering, he will see his
offspring and prolong his days, and the will of
the LORD will prosper in his hand. After the
suffering of his soul, he will see the light of
life and be satisfied by his knowledge my
righteous servant will justify many, and he will
bear their iniquities. Therefore I will give him
a portion among the great, and he will divide the
spoils with the strong, because he poured out his
life unto death, and was numbered with the
transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and
made intercession for the transgressors.
20The Crucifixion Scriptures fulfilled
- But when they came to Jesus and found that he
was already dead, they did not break his legs.
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side
with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and
water. The man who saw it has given testimony,
and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells
the truth, and he testifies so that you also may
believe. These things happened so that the
scripture would be fulfilled "Not one of his
bones will be broken," and, as another scripture
says, "They will look on the one they have
pierced. (John 1935)
21The Crucifixion Jesus Words from the Cross were
recorded
- Dear woman, here is your son,(John) and to the
disciple here is your mother.(Mary) (John 19
26-27) - I am thirsty (John 1928)
- My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (
Matthew 2746, Psalm 221) - It is finished.
- Father, into your hands I commit my
spirit.(Luke 2346)
22The Sign over the Cross
- The sign was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.
- It was probably large and could be easily read
from the busy road by the Damascus Gate. - Jesus was the "featured criminal" and was
sentenced to death under Roman Law for "sedition
against the Roman state", and under Jewish law
for "the sin of blasphemy.
23Name Of God Written Over The Cross  Pilate wrote
a title and had it put it on the Cross JESUS OF
NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS". "JESUS OF
NAZARETH, ( John 19 19) In Hebrew Yeshua
Ha'Nazarei W'Melech Ha'Yehudim In code YHWH,
the Name of God, which was blasphemous to the
Sanhedrin. "Therefore the chief priests of the
Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of
the Jews,' but, 'He said, "I am the King of the
Jews".' Pilate answered, "What I have written, I
have written. (John 1921-22)
24Blood on the Mercy Seat Ron Wyatts Discoveries
- Ron Wyatt, an amateur bible archaeologist from
Tennessee, claimed to have discovered the Ark of
the Covenant 20 feet below Golgotha, the
crucifixion site in 1982. - He found blood on the west side of the Mercy
Seat of the Ark of the Covenant, which he
believed had trickled down a crack caused by the
earthquake on the day of the Crucifixion.
25Blood on the Mercy Seat
- This fulfilled Leviticus 1615-16, where the High
Priest would go into the Holy of Holies on the
Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) - "He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin
offering for the people and take its blood behind
the curtain and do with it as he did with the
bull's blood He shall sprinkle it on the
atonement cover and in front of it. In this way
he will make atonement for the Most Holy Place
because of the uncleanness and rebellion of the
Israelites, whatever their sins have been. He is
to do the same for the Tent of Meeting, which is
among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
26AFTER THE CRUCIFIXION The body of Jesus was taken
down from the cross The disciples took
Jesus' Body down from the Cross shortly after His
death at 3 pm. They had only three hours during
which to bury Jesus' Body, before the start of
the Passover at 6 pm. They therefore had to act
quickly, and did not have time for the full
Jewish traditional burial in "windings", which
took many hours.
27Jesus Body was laid in the Tomb of Joseph of
Arimathea
- Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Sanhedrin,
asked Pilate for Jesus body. - He took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen
cloth and placed it in his own new tomb that he
had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in
front of the entrance to the tomb. - (Matthew 27 59-60).
28The Garden TombGeneral Gordon discovered this
rock tomb near Golgotha, the place of crucifixion
in 1883. It is believed to be the tomb of
Joseph of Arimathea, where Jesus was buried.
- There is a groove for a rolling stone, which
would have covered the entrance, a crack in the
rock probably caused by an earthquake and a cross
on the wall, a sign indicating that the early
church met here!
29The Empty Tomb
- Early on the first day of the week, while it was
still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and
saw that the stone had been removed from the
entrance.. Simon Peter saw the strips of linen
lying there as well as the burial cloth that had
been around Jesus head. The cloth was folded up
by itself separate from the linen. (John 201,
6-7a)
30After His Resurrection, Jesus Christ appeared to
the disciples in Jerusalem and Galilee-
- He appeared to Mary at the Tomb and the
disciples, showing them His hands and side. He
showed His scars to Doubting Thomas, (John 20).
He talked to disciples on the road to Emmaus (
Luke 2413-49) and He cooked breakfast for the
disciples on the lakeside. (John 21)
31After His Resurrection, Jesus Christ appeared
to-
- Mary Magdalene by the Tomb (John 2010-18)
- Mary and the other women (Matthew 281-10)
- Peter (1 Corinthians 155)
- 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke
2413-35) - 10 disciples (Luke 2436-49)
- 11 disciples in a room (John 2024-31)
- 7 disciples by the Sea of Galilee (John 21)
- all the disciples (Matthew 2816-20)
- 500 people (1 Corinthians 156)
- James (1 Corinthians 157)
- all the disciples again before He ascended to
Heaven - (Acts 14-8) accompanied by two men in white
clothes - (possibly Moses and Elijah)
- Saul on his way to Damascus (Acts 91-9) who
became Paul.
32Josephus recorded Jesus appearance on the Third
Day
- Flavius Josephus was a Jewish Pharisee and Jewish
historian born in 37 AD. He wrote - "Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise
man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he
was a doer of wonderful works ... Pilate ...
condemned him to the cross ... he appeared to
them alive again on the third day."
33After His suffering, he showed himself to these
men and gave many convincing proofs that he was
alive. He appeared to them over a period of
forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
(Acts 13)---------------------------------------
------------------------------------------That
which was from the beginning, which we have
heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we
have looked at and our hands have touched -
this we proclaim concerning the Word of Life. (1
John 11)
- Concerning the crucifixion
- The man who saw it has given testimony. And his
testimony is true. He knows that he tells the
truth and he testifies so that you also may
believe. (John 1935)
34The Evidence for the Shroud of Turin being Jesus
Burial Cloth
- The mysterious shroud bears faint ghostly images
of a crucified man, with all the wounds of
scourging and crucifixion. - It has undergone a huge number of tests to prove
its authenticity.
35The Shroud was a Sindon like Marks Cloak
- A Sindon (Greek) was a large flat piece of
linen cloth. - "Now a certain young man followed Him, having a
linen cloth (Sindon) thrown around his naked
body. And the young men laid hold of him, and he
left the linen and fled from them naked. (Mark
1451,52) - This was in contrast to the usual winding cloth
(Greek Keiriais) used to wrap Lazarus' body - "And he who had died came out bound hand and foot
with grave clothes, (Greek Keiriais) and his
face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to
them, "Loose him, and let him go.(John 11.44)
36The Shroud of Turin the Burial Cloth of Jesus
- It is a large piece of yellow coloured linen 14
feet 3 inches long and 3 feet, 7 inches wide. - There are also blood marks present on the scalp,
right chest wall, both wrists and both ankles. - It been kept in a silver chest in the Chapel of
the Holy Shroud in the Cathedral of St. John the
Baptist in Turin, Italy, since 1578.
37The Image on the Shroud of Turin was
supernaturally created at the Resurrection
- Soft X- Rays may have been Radiated at the
Resurrection - An excess of C-14 isotope was present in the
Shroud. - The Image on the Shroud pre-dated all other X-ray
radiographs by nearly 1,900 years!
38The Resurrection was similar to the
Transfiguration- a phenomenon caused by a
supernatural emission of light and subatomic
particles moving at the speed of light.
- During the Transfiguration, Jesus Christ's Body
became as bright as the sun and His clothes as
white as light. - It is believed that Jesus also entered
Eternity, as evidenced by the appearance of Moses
and Elijah.
39according to Theoretical Physics
- At the speed of light Time ceases to exist, and
Eternity is entered. - We believe that as Jesus' Body entered Eternity,
Time ceased to exist - the molecules of His Body were moving at the
speed of light emitting both light and subatomic
particles. - this radiation was possibly similar to cosmic
radiation. - We are told in the Bible that "God is Light" (1
John 15). - The Shroud almost certainly became "as white
as light". - Moses' face shone with light, so we believe that
The Shroud probably also shone with light.
40THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPH OF THE SHROUD IN 1898
- Interest in the Shroud dramatically increased
when the Italian photographer, Secundo Pia, took
the first photograph of the Shroud in 1898. - Both pictures above have a mixture of
photo-positive and photo-negative images. The
picture on the left is a photo-positive picture
of the face on the Shroud, with red blood marks
from the Crown of Thorns. - There is a faint image of a face, which is in
photo-negative, making it difficult to
understand.
41The Blood Stains
- There are blood marks on the scalp, both wrists,
the right chest wall, and both ankles. - There are multiple laceration wounds from the
scourging. - The blood is Type AB, the rarest blood group.
- It contains a high level of bright red Bilirubin,
- a bile pigment, found in high levels in the blood
of torture victims.
42Scourge marks on the back and lower limbs shown
on Photo Images
- White photo-negative images indicate profuse
bleeding from the wounds in the scalp, and feet. - This is because the Blood of Jesus Christ
actually stained the Shroud, before the Image was
created at His Resurrection.
43Piercing the Chest
- There is a large blood stain over the right chest
wall area, consistent with the post mortem wound
to the chest. - There is a penetrating skin wound in the right
chest wall produced by a sharp puncturing
instrument, almost certainly a Roman spear. - The spear wound is between the 5th and 6th Right
ribs.
44The Nailing of the Hands 1
- In mediaeval paintings the nails were always
painted inserted into the palms, rather than the
wrists. - Experiments on dead bodies shows that the weight
of a human body cannot be supported by nails
through both palms.
45The Nailing of the Hands 2
- Examination of the area of the hands shows the
left hand over the right hand (remember the image
is transposed in a photo - negative image). - There is also a puncture wound in both wrists,
from which blood is seeping, draining up both
forearms on the Shroud.
46The Nailing of the Feet
- The feet were crossed over and one long nail
driven through both feet. - The image on the right is an X-ray showing the
probable position of the nail, between the 2nd
and 3rd Metatarsal spaces.
47The Crown of Thorns- arrows show the copious
blood flow on the head
- The crown was probably made from a bush of thorns
from the - Lote bush, which grows wild in the Jerusalem
area. - The thorns are up to two inches long, and caused
profuse bleeding. Mark 1517-18 "And they
clothed Him with purple and they twisted a crown
of thorns, put it on His head, and began to
salute Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
48Pollen and spores from 58 species have been
identified. 20 are known to grow in Jerusalem
itself and 8 others grow in the vicinity in the
Judean desert or the Dead Sea area. Professor
Danin found a high density of pollen grains on
the shroud which he identified as Tumbleweed
GUNDELIA TOURNEF ZYGOPHYLLUM DUMOSUM. These
two species co-exist in a limited area only, in
Israel.
- Pollen Grains found on the Shroud
49It was Jewish custom to place small coins
over the eyes of a dead body, to keep the eyelids
closed.( Jean-Philippe Fontanille of
www.menorahcoinproject.org)
- The Coins Over The Eyes On The Shroud
Professor Alan Whanger's research seems to
indicate that the coins placed over the
anatomical eyelids on the Shroud were both minted
by Pontius Pilate in the year AD 29.
503-D Images from the Shroud
- Mask
- In 1976 it was discovered that a photograph of
the Shroud produced a three dimensional image
when placed under a VP8 Image Analysing Computer.
51Conclusion Jesus was not confined to the normal
physical laws of time and space.
-
-
- Jesus still bore the marks of the wounds in
His hands, feet, and chest.
(John 2020). - He could be seen and touched as a physical
body of flesh and bone. (Matthew 289,
Luke 2437-39). - He invited people to examine His Body
- (Luke 2439-40, John 2020, 27).
- He ate and drank with His disciples after His
Resurrection - (Luke 2441-43 Acts 1041).
- Jesus could appear and disappear in a closed
room, indicating that He was not confined to the
normal physical laws of time and space.
52 At the Resurrection, Jesus Body was
changed from a dead Body to a Resurrected
Glorified Body.
- How John described the risen Christ
- "His head and hair were white like wool, as white
as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire His
feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a
furnace, and His voice as the sound of many
waters" (Revelation 114-16)
53Hes Alive, Hes RisenAfter the Resurrection
Jesus ascended to heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. (Mark 16 19)
- He is coming back to judge the living and the
dead. - (Revelation 5, 2011-13)
