- A vertically integrated Parastatal organization
under the Ministry of Energy and Minerals - Established in 1964
- Incorporated under the Companies Ordinance Cap
212 (now Company Act) - Directed by the Board of Directors
- The Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM) is
responsible for policy formulation and overall
sector supervision.

- The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory
Authority (EWURA) is the sector regulator. - TANESCO Core business are Generation,
Transmission and Distribution of electricity - Sales electricity to the mainland and bulk power
supply to the Island of Zanzibar.

- The installed capacity in the main grid is
1226.24MW. Hydro 561.84 MW (46) and Thermal
664.4 MW (54). - Capacity of thermal plants (Gas 441MW Fuel Oil
223.4 MW) - Off-grid stations total capacity is 73.77 MW
- Highest grid system demand is 934.62 MW recorded
in December 2014 .

- Transmission network comprises of 2,732 km of
220kV lines 1,555.79 km of 132 kV lines and
578.7 km of 66 kV lines, totalling 4,866.85km by
the end of December 2014. - Distribution System
- Total distribution network (MV lines) is 20,704
km, constituting 15,176 km of 33kV line, 5,528km
of 11kV lines and 40,094 km of low voltage (400
and 230V) lines.

216. Conclusion
- The current situation shows that there is
intensive investment in generation, transmission
and distribution of Power in Tanzania which will
stabilise Power availability in the Country. - The Government of Tanzania still invites
potential investors to invest in Electric Power
Generation, Transmission, and Distribution to
curb the future demands.
