• First World U.S. and its allies
• Second World Soviet Union and its allies

• Some countries are willing to take sides for
  assistance
• money, technology, military

• The Shah (king) of Iran aligned Iran with the
  U.S. which angered the ayatollahs (Muslim
  leaders)
• Most Arab nations do not like the U.S. because of
  Israel

• He fled to the U.S.
• 52 American hostages held for 444 days before
  they were released in retaliation for the Shah
  being allowed to sanctuary in the U.S.

• After the war, the U.S. continues to support
  governments who are anti-communist

  oppress (hurt) the people
• Soviet Union will intervene to help revolutions
  overthrow the dictators

• In 1959 Fidel Castro overthrew U.S. supported
