Title: How Does Air Get into the Lungs?

1
How Does Air Get into the Lungs?
  • Breath in through the nose or mouth
  • Air flows down the trachea towards the thorax
  • The thorax divides and forms the left and right
    main bronchi
  • These break up into smaller and smaller bronchi
and eventually lead to the microscopic alveoli

2
The Role of the Diaphragm
  • The diaphragm contracts and creates a vacuum in
the space it leaves forcing air in and when the
air is exhaled it relaxes forcing the air out
  • It regulates the amount of air that enters the
lungs along with the ribs cage, sternum and
    spinal cord

3
Importance of the Diaphragm
  • Contracts to allow the lungs to expand and take
    in air
  • The diaphragm then relaxes to expel the air out
  • It is voluntary/involuntary- you can stop
yourself from breathing but usually the breathing
    process is involuntary (like blinking)

4
Breathing/Respiration
  • Oxygen is the most important element needed in
    the air we breathe.
  • People average 20,000 breaths a day
  • Respiration is the exchange of Oxygen and Carbon
Dioxide from the bodys cells. This process keeps
    our cells alive.
