Title: TURN YOUR MIND on to Micro Organisms

1
TURN YOUR MIND on to Micro Organisms
Micro Organisms Good and Bad
2
Vocabulary
These are the key terms that you will need to
learn in order to understand Micro-Organisms.
  1. Micro-Organism
  2. Virus
  3. Bacteria
  4. Mould
  5. Fungus
  1. Disease
  2. Germs
  3. Harmful
  4. Beneficial
  5. Microscope

3
Micro-organisms
  • What are micro-organisms?
  • Micro-organisms are very tiny living things. They
are so small that you need a microscope to see
    them.
  • Viruses, bacteria and fungus are all types of
    micro-organism. Micro-organisms that cause
    diseases are often called germs.
  • Micro-organisms are all around us, in the air, in
our bodies and in water. Some micro-organisms are
harmful to us, but others are helpful to us.

4
Harmful micro-organisms
  • Some diseases, like chickenpox, are caused
  • by viruses. Diseases caused by viruses usually
  • spread easily from one person to another.
  • Uncooked foods (especially meat) can contain
  • bacteria. The bacteria are killed when the
  • food is cooked properly. But if you eat food
  • that has not been cooked properly, the
  • bacteria may survive and make you feel very
  • ill.
  • Mold is a type of micro-organism that grows
  • on decaying food. It can make you ill if you eat
  • it.

5
LET US RECAP.
  • What are the three Harmful Micro Organisms?

6
Harmful micro-organisms
  • HOW CAN YOU AVOID SPREADING HARMFUL
  • MICRO-ORGANISMS?
  • You can avoid spreading harmful micro-organisms
    by
  • washing your hands before eating, after preparing
food and after using the toilet.
  • covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
  • keeping away from other people if you have a
    disease that is easily spread.
  • not eating food which is not fresh or has not
    been cooked properly.
  • keeping uncooked meat separate from other foods
    in the fridge.

7
Helpful micro-organisms
  • Here are some examples of helpful
    micro-organisms.
  • When bread is made, a micro-organisms called
    yeast is
  • added to the dough to make the bread rise.
  • Yogurt is made by boiling milk and adding special
  • bacteria to it. The bacteria turn the sugar in
    the milk into
  • acid. The acid makes the milk go thick and stops
    any
  • harmful bacteria growing.
  • Inside a pile of dead leaves are millions of tiny
    bacteria.
  • These bacteria feed on the leaves and break them
    down
  • into nutrients. The nutrients go back into the
    soil where
  • they can be used by plants.

8
LET US RECAP.
  • What are the the HELPFUL Micro Organisms, and
    what do they do?

9
TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING
  • Most Micro-Organisms cannot be seen without a
  • ____________________.
  • Which of these is not true about Micro-Organisms
    a. They are all harmful
  • b. They feed and grow
  • c. They reproduce
  • Yeast is used for ___________________________.
  • Why should cooked and uncooked foods be stored
    separately?
  • Because bacteria only likes cooked food
  • Because bacteria only likes uncooked food
  • To stop bacteria from spreading from one to
    another
  • Which of these is not caused by a Micro-Organism
  • Measles
  • Tooth Decay
  • A Sprained Ankle

10
TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING
  • Which of these Micro-Organisms is useful?
  • Bacteria that decomposes leaves
  • Salmonella
  • Chicken Pox Virus
  • Which of these Micro-Organisms is harmful?
  • Yeast
  • Bacteria in Yogurt
  • Fruit Mold
  • Bacteria and Viruses are both types of
    Micro-Organisms, which is smaller?___________.
  • Which of these is true
  • Micro-Organisms are all around us
  • Micro-Organisms are only found in the kitchen
  • All Micro-Organism cause illness
  • Cleaning your teeth regularly helps prevent tooth
    decay because
  • Micro-Organisms dont like the taste of
    toothpaste

Follow me to on our special fieldtrip to the
Microbe Zoo. Here you will get to visit
different places where Micro-Organisms live.
MICROBE ZOO
12
Project Learning
You are going to be creating a brochure for the
Microbe Zoo. After we take our fieldtrip and
explore all of the different areas of the zoo,
you will create a brochure for all the tourists
that are coming to visit the zoo. Now sit back
and get ready for a MICROBE ADVENTURE!!!
13
Project Guidelines
  • Your brochure will include a section for each of
    the following exhibits
  • Dirt Land
  • Animal Pavilion
  • Snack Bar
  • Space Adventure
  • Water World

EXHIBITS

Project Layout
FRONT
WATER WORLD Here you will write about the different bodies of water that microbes call home. You must have at least one illustration here! SNACK BAR What Microbes have you been eating? Here you will write the information about what microbes you will find in the Snack Bar You can use illustrations in this section as well. COVER PAGE Here you will create an AMAZING EYE CAPTIVATING, ATTENTION GRASPING COVER for your BROCHURE. Use lots of color and imagination so that people will want to look at your brochure.

BACK
DIRT LAND Here you will write about the dirt world that microbes call home. You must have at least one illustration here! ANIMAL PAVILION Here you will write about how animals interact with Microbes and how animals, plants, and fungi depend on microbes for their survival. You will have at least one illustration here! SPACE ADVENTURES Here you will write about any new scientific plans that involve microbes and the microbe life in our atmosphere. You will have at least one illustration here!
