Opening of the West

• The United States and Great Britain signed a
  treaty in 1846 defining the border of USA and
  Canada in the Oregon territory.
• This was known as the Oregon Treaty
• USA had full claim to the unoccupied land.

• Gold Rush Many settlers went west on the Oregon
  and California trails to reap the profits from
  the Gold Rush of 1849 (We will discuss more in
  depth next week)
• Land Many settlers came to own their own piece
  of land or to be their own boss avoiding the
  harsh working conditions of factories in the
  east.

Oregon Territory

• IN 1818 Russia pulls its claim to the Oregon
  territory leaving the US and UK staking claims.
• The treaty of 1846 established the 49th parallel
  as the permanent border to the Oregon Territory.

• Oregon Trail was a 2,000 mile trail that had to
  be traversed by foot to reach the lands of the
  Oregon Territory.

• The trip to the territory was monotonous,
