Title: Classification of Diseases

1
Classification of Diseases
  • By Danielle Wilson,
  • Nicole Ferrara and
  • Brittany Baker

2
Think Pair Share!
  • Discuss with your partner about the diseases that
    you already know.

3
Vocab
  • Schistosomus reflexus
  • Congenital
  • Hemophilia
  • Arthritis
  • Pheumothorax
  • Peritontis
  • Iatrogenic
  • Idiopathic
  • Neoplasm
  • Metastasis

4
How do Vets Diagnosis Diseases?
  • How to Diagnose a Disease
  • First clinical signs that an animal presents are
examined, this could be the result of many
    different diseases.
  • Next they physically examine the sick animal. The
vet considers a list of different diagnosis.
(List includes all the diseases that may result
    in the clinical signs)
  • Lastly, diagnostic tests will be performed.

5
How to determine a disease?
  • Anomalies
  • Trauma
  • Infection
  • Nutrition
  • Toxin
  • Neoplasm
  • Metabolic

6
Metabolism
  • Describes all processes occuring within the
animal. This occurs when there is a disruption in
    this natural process.
  • - Example Endorine diseases, diabetes,
    hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism, milk fever,
failure of organs (such as liver or kidney
    disrupting the metabolism)
  • Treatments vary upon disease balancing active
nutrients in the body is the most common treatment

7
Anomalies
  • A genetic defect in small animals and is
    genetically inherited
  • Clinical Signs may not be present at birth
  • Example Six toes, short tail (cats), hemophilia,
    and two heads ext.
  • Treatment surgery, in some cases the animal can
    live with it

9
Degenerative
  • Degenerative disease is associated with aging. It
occurs with the normal wear and tear that occurs
to the body over the years
  • Example Arthritis and Disk Disease are the two
    most common diseases
  • The only treatment is medication

10
Trauma
  • Trauma and toxic diseases can be some of the
    easiest to diagnose or treat
  • Trauma often damages specific regions and the
    effect can be quite localized
  • Examples- broken bone, being hit by a car, burn
    ext.
  • Treatment varies upon trauma

Toxin
  • Common cause of illness in animals.
  • If the toxin is known a specific antidote or
    treatment can be administered
  • Examples alcohol, chocolate, copper, lead, and
    nicotine
  • Treatment induced vomiting for some cases, for
other cases vomiting can be harmful in certain
toxins. Activated charcoal is given orally to
bind or absorb the toxin that still remains

13
Tumor
  • Tumors can be benign or malignant
  • Benign tumors are not harmful and dont spread
  • Malignant tumors are harmful and can spread
  • Treatment surgery and therapy

Review game!
  • Answer the following questions and if you get it
    right you receive a reward!

16
Question 1
  • How is a disease diagnosed?
  • Clinical signs are looked at
  • Physical examination
  • Diagnostic tests

17
Question 2
  • What is metabolism?
  • All processes occurring within an animal

18
Question 3
  • What is a metabolic disease?
  • When there is a disruption in the natural process

19
Question 4
  • What are examples of anomalies?
  • Six toes, short tail, hemophilia, two heads

20
Question 5
  • How are degenerative diseases treated?
  • Medication

21
Question 6
  • Why is trauma easy to diagnose?
  • Because it damages a specific region, and the
    effect is localized

22
Question 7
  • What are some common toxins?
  • Chocolate, alcohol, copper, lead, nicotine

23
Question 8
  • How is an animal that has ingested a toxin
    treated?
  • In some cases induced vomiting it can be harmful,
    activated charcoal

24
Question 9
  • What is the difference between benign and
    malignant tumors?
  • Benign are not harmful and dont spread while
malignant tumors are harmful and can spread

25
Question 10
  • What things are used to determine a disease?
    (list 3)
  • Anomalies, trauma, infection, nutrition, toxin,
