Anticipatory Set
  • By Maureen Coddington, Joy Fierro- Ogden, and
    Amy Doce

2
What is an anticipatory set?
  • Anticipatory Set - An anticipatory set is an
activity which prepares and motivates students
    for learning.
  • Grabber An important thing that anticipatory set
does is to grab the students, not focused upon
    learning.
  • They can also establish a readiness or
anticipation for what is to follow.  For it to do
so, it must pique their interest.
  • It should whet the class's appetite for the
    subject to be taught.

3
What is the purpose of anticipatory sets?
  • To gauge the students' level of collective
background knowledge of the subject to help
    inform your instruction.
  • Briefly expose the students to the lesson's
objectives and how you will get them to the end
    result.
  • Tell the students briefly what the lesson will be
    about.
  • The What? and Why?
  • Activate the students' existing knowledge base

4
What are some questions I should ask myself as a
teacher?
  • How can I involve as many as students as
possible, piquing their interests for the subject
    matter to come?
  • How should I inform my students of the lesson's
context and objective, in kid-friendly language?
  • What do the students need to know before they can
delve into the lesson plan itself and direct
    instruction?

5
Examples of Anticipatory sets.
  • Ask students to relate a personal experience
related to the objective of the lesson.
  • Ask students to list information from a previous
lesson, asking students to react to a picture, or
answer a question pertaining to the lesson.
  • By having an activity related to what will be
learned, it shifts their attention to the
    learning process.
  • KWL charts, short activities, games and songs
