Power Up.. Power Down

• Turn it off..turn it back on Nine times out of
  ten, rebooting your computerand any equipment
  that connects to itwill solve the problem.

Drop everything and come running..

• Just because we are buddies at work, dont
  expect me to come running every time youve got a
  problem, Ive got a slew of IT problems to fix.

Were like Santa

• We know if youve been bad or good. Fessing up
  to what really happened right before the system
  crashed is going to save timeand Im going to
  figure it out anyway.

Use strong passwords

• Combining letters and numbersbut not your
  birthdateto create a base password, and adding
  a unique suffix for each site you use. If your
  base password is your spouses initials and your
  anniversary date CM08082008.

Make sure your antivirus is working.

• Making sure you have current antivirus software
  and it is actually scanning your machine on a
  regular basis.. (You arent closing the client
  each time it starts)Therefore you have it set to
  update at least once a daylike I set it when it
  was first installedgenerally around lunch time.

Theres no free lunch

• Downloading free music, movies and games from
  file-sharing sites can open holes in your system
  for others to exploit. Play it safe and use
  established services like iTunes, and Netflix on
  your home computer. Not your WORK computer!

Remember Public Wi-Fi is Public!

• If you dont have a compelling reason to check
  your e-mail or bank account while sipping a latte
  at the mall, dont do it. While youre on a
  public-network, even one thats encrypted, a
  nearby hacker can capture your passwords.

Give it a Rest

• Turning off your computer when its not in use
  saves energy and clears out the RAM, or temporary
  memory, which would otherwise slow your machine
  over time.

As for your home computer

• If you cant get online, call your internet
  provider first. Connection problems can often be
  checked out and fixedfree.
