Title: KEYBOARDING

1
KEYBOARDING
IS..
  • The Penmanship of the Computer Age

2
KEYBOARDING
Simply means the way that you as a computer
operator enter information into the computer.
Correct Keyboarding is a skill that you acquire
to allow you to enter data in a more efficient
way. But..
?
WHO decided which was the most efficient way
3
Lets BACK up in time to 1872
ENTER Mr. Christopher Latham Sholes, one of the
three inventors of the typewriter
  • The first machines keys jammed easily, and jams
were hard to clear, so Sholes arranged the keys
to avoid sequences that caused jams.
  • He purposely arranged keys so that the old
fashioned manualtypewriters would not have the
    commonly used keys together.

4
Lets BACK up in time to 1872
  • This allowed keys to spring back before they
    were needed again.
  • His motive was to prevent jams rather than
    promote fast keystrokes.

5
It was called the "Sholes Glidden Type Writer,"
and it was produced by the gunmakers E. Remington
Sons in Ilion, NY from 1874-1878
The original Type Writer was heavily decorated
with colorful decals and gold paint. A foot
treadle was provided for the carriage return. If
you think it all looks a lot like an old sewing
machine, you're right.
The First TYPEWRITER

  • His HOME ROW keys (in the middle) can be used
    to make 120 words
  • Despite other attempts to rearrange the keyboard,
the QWERTY arrangement has lasted over 100 years.

7
Moving FORWARD from 1872 to 1920s through 1930
ENTER Mr. August Dvorak
  • He was an efficiency expert . His keys are in an
order that eliminated most of the movement
between rows by placing the most commonly used
keys in the middle HOME ROW
  • On this simplified keyboard, fingers need only
travel 1 mile to do a typical day's typing on
QWERTY, fingers travel 16 to 20 miles to do the
    same work!

Sometimes KEYBOARDING is called TYPING. TYPING
was the term used when you worked on a
TYPEWRITER. When you TYPE on a TYPEWRITER what
you type appears on the paper INSTANTLY.
Typing focuses on OUTPUT
KEYBOARDING focuses on INPUT
