Title: 3.1 Properties of Matter

3.1 Properties of Matter
2
SUBSTANCES
  • Matter with a uniform and unchanging chemical
    composition
  • Can not be separated by physical means, like
    filtering, distilling, etc
  • Also called a pure substance (includes elements
    compounds not mixtures)

3
PHYSICAL PROPERTY
  • Can be observed or measured w/o changing the
    samples composition
  • Examples density, color, odor, hardness, state,
    melting point

4
CHEMICAL PROPERTY
  • The ability (or inability) of a substance to
combine with or change into another substance(s)
  • Usually the result of contact w/ another
    substance, electricity or thermal energy
  • Does affect the chemical composition
  • Examples rusting, oxidizing, burning,
    electrolysis

5
EXTENSIVE VS. INTENSIVE PROPERTIES
  • Extensive depends on the amount of sample (ie
    volume, mass)
  • Intensive are same regardless of sample size (ie
    density, boiling point)
  • Intensive are dependent on the particles in the
substance (not amount) so are good for
    identifying substances

6
STATES OF MATTER
  • Identified by shape, volume and compressibility
  • Vapor differs from a gas how?
