8New Roles for PREP Support Staff at ESE
- Vince and Rick are ESEs interface with PREP
- ESE and CS are working together to continue
providing PREPs customers with excellent
services - PREPs diminishing scope creates great
opportunity for staff to work in ESEs projects - PCB layout
- Wire bonding
- Firmware design
- Software design
- Training
- The trend is to spend less time with PREP repair
- Spikes are expected.
- Steady state level determined by size of PREP
Vince Pavlicek Bill Barker Stew Bledsoe Tom
Boes Hank Connor Rick Mahlum
9Their Current Effort Allocation Already Reflects
this Trend
10ESE Metrics
- Equipment repair
- Equipment repaired per month
- Labor employed in PREP repair
- Effort allocation
- Labor utilization per project
- Labor utilization per funding source
- Ill check monthly our compliance with CDs

13Project Status - NOvA
- Scope Schedule
- Data Combiner Module Prototype Schematic done,
layout underway, firmware started, software soon.
This design contains more than the required
functionality and could be used for the Near
Detector test Dec 2007. - Timing system Evaluation GPS receiver purchased
as the timing reference and will be evaluated
this fall with the prototype DCM. System
architecture has been proposed, accepted and
being integrated with the far detector cooling
and power distribution design going on now. - ESE Effort
- 1 FTE
- Stakeholders
- Bill Haynes, Rick Kwarciany, and Jim Franzen
14Project Status - Accelerator
- Quick update to projects from another report
- MI BPM Long list of people
- One task remaining read-back of front-end
settings. Requires changes to the Transition
controller (Rapisarda) and the Timing card
(Haynes). Designs are done, testing shows only
one bug, correction is stopped by vacation. - Cleaning up spare parts, documentation and loose
ends. - TeV BPM Bill Barker
- Approximately 4 days supporting repairs and
updates with AD personnel. - IPM Rick Kwarciany
- Operating at some level. Commissioned Oct 2005.
In FY06 Rick has spent 6 weeks consulting on
debugging and changing firmware in support of the
operation.
15Project Status - ILCTA Engineering Support
- Scope Schedule
- Simcon Low Level RF Controller The 30 page
schematic is done and the review scheduled for
today. The layout is starting. The firmware
are changes well underway. - Stakeholders
- Gustavo Cancelo, Ted Zmuda, Rick Kwarciany, Ken
Treptow, and Neal Wilcer
16Project Status - CDF Run2 Engineering Support
- FY06 Effort Projection was 1.3 FTE
- 10 month total is 5.54 FTE-months or .55
FTE-months - CDF Projects Haynes, Bledsoe, Treptow, Pavlicek
- CDF Clock Clone Card Complete/commissioned
- 15 additional High Voltage Crowbars done this
month - DOIM Receiver Investigation
- CAEN Power Supply Radiation Tolerance
Investigation - CDF ongoing Support - Haynes, Chramowicz, Pham,
Treptow, Pavlicek, Rapisarda, Zmuda, Bowden - Clock Clone Card, Crowbar Module repair, SVX
modules (6) consulting in support of ESG.
17Project Status D0 Run2 Engineering Support
- FY06 Effort Projection was 1.3 FTE
- 10 month Total is 8.25 FTE Months or 0.83
FTE/month - D0 Projects Zmuda, Rapisarda, Wilcer, Kwarciany
- D0 L1 Cal trigger upgrade - Complete but under
diagnosis. - VLSB module production and testing Complete
- Vertex Trigger Luminosity Monitor Firmware -
Commissioned - D0 Support - Zmuda, Pham, Rapisarda, Wilcer,
Kwarciany, Bowden - VRB Controller (VRBC), Vertex Trigger Board
Luminosity Monitor Firmware, Trigger Distribution
System, Fiber Tracker Mixer System, VRB module
consulting in support of ESG.
18Future Projects CMS Upgrade
- Interesting opportunity to participate early in
the development of the project - Good chance that Fermilab will be a major
stakeholder - Given BTeV and CMS forward pixels experience
- Our group is well positioned to worn on the
design of - DAQ
- Pixel detector
- Trigger
19Future Projects ILC Detector RD
- Test beam facility at M-Test
- ESE as one stop shop
- Create group within ESE to support new customers
to the test beam - Provide sw, hw, and fw solutions to the test beam
community - Goal design new DAQ with new telescope
- Need sw help from Gerry ideally 1 FTE for FY07
- Supported by ILC and PPD
- Pixilated detector RD
- Wafer probing
- ASIC specifications and testing
- System analysis
- Research of 3D packaging

CMS
- Telescope of 6 BTeV pixel detectors (50 ?m ? 400
?m) - 2 Y-measurement planes
- 4 X-measurement planes
- CMS pixel detector in the center
- Track projection error
- about 3 ?m on X-direction about 8 ?m on
Y-direction. - PROBLEM small tracking volume
21ESE has a long history at MTest

CMS
- Current pixel telescope single chips
- Replace with planes of 8-chip modules
23MIPP, INFN-Pisa, INFN-Lecce and others
- I get about 1 call per week from people all over
the world asking for pixel detectors - They are all trying to build a pixilated tracker
for some time of test beam application - Once hearing the complexity of the device, most
never call again - Some call back sporadically
- Few keep calling all the time
- It would be great to have a group dedicated to
the support of serious requests - MIPP trigger upgrade will try to leverage
Phenix/ILC work (economies of scale?) - INFN-Pisa wants to use SVX4 hybrids from CDF
Runiib - INFN-Lecce wants to use FSSR hybrids from BTeV
24CDF CEAN Power Supply Radiation Tolerance
- Description
- CAEN High Voltage power supplies are in the
collision hall and demonstrate problems
indicative of single event upset (SET). - Scope
- Investigate specifics of problems and possible
mitigations including shielding, orientation and
hardware or software changes. - Schedule
- Low priority intermittent.
- ESE Effort
- About 1 day per month. Will become more
important as the luminosity grows. - Stakeholders
- Vince Pavlicek, Rick Tesarek (CDF), Silicon SPL.
25CDF DOIM Receiver (Bit Booster)
- Description
- Radiation damage is reducing the light output of
the fiber optic link transmitters. They can be
turned up but that happens in groups of 95 and
in 4 or 5 groups the brightest bit is too bright
for the receiver. We are investigating making a
new wide range receiver. - Scope
- Small prototype built with support from CDF. Need
design resources. - Schedule
- Resource driven. Current prototype works. Need
production layout. - ESE Effort
- 15 FTE/mo for 10 months.
- Stakeholders
- Ken Treptow, Silicon SPL
