Title: Our Two Main Concepts

1
Our Two Main Concepts
  • Energy
  • The capacity to do work
  • (the ability to cause change)
  • Force
  • Anything that causes a mass to accelerate
  • Push or pull

2
Transformation of Energy
  • Energy is never created or destroyed, but can
    change forms
  • A force causes energy to change forms
  • i.e. the FORCE of gravity can turn kinetic energy
into gravitational potential and vice versa
  • The force exerted by a spring can convert spring
    potential energy into kinetic energy

3
Types of Energy
  • Kinetic movement
  • Gravitational potential the stored energy
    caused by having height
  • Spring potential the stored energy when a
    spring is stretched or compressed
  • Heat least usable form

4
Types of Forces
  • Gravity converts GPE to KE or KE to GPE
  • Spring converts KE to SPE or SPE to KE
  • Friction converts any type of energy into heat

5
Net Forces
  • When two forces act on an object can combine or
    cancel each other out
  • The net force is the total force, and is in a
    single direction
  • A net force causes a mass to accelerate (Fma)
  • aF/m

6
Free Body Diagrams
  • Are how we monitor all of the forces acting upon
    an object

Net Force is 20N down
7
LOL Graphs
  • Are how we monitor changes in the form of energy
and energy lost as heat (friction)

Concept Map
  • Your task for today is to create concept map
  • This should show how each of the terms connect
for example a FORCE causes a MASS to ACCELERATE
  • Define the terms in a way that helps you
  • i.e. You have GPE whenever you have height
  • A spring force is when a spring pushes or pulls
    an object
