• Mass spectrometry is a method of analysing
  particles of different masses.
• In order to understand the technique it is
  necessary to examine the five main parts of a
  mass spectrometer. They are
• 1 The Sample Unit 2 Ionisation Chamber
• 3 Accelerator 4 Separation Unit 5

• Vaporisaton The sample in injected in to the
• instrument and is
  changed into gas.
• Ionisation An electron gun fires high energy
  electrons
• at the atoms or molecules
  of the sample gas.
• Acceleration The ions pass through two
  negative
• plates and this accelerates them to
  high speeds.

• Separation By passing through a magnetic field
  their paths are bent according to their masses.
  The lighter particles are easier to deflect.

• Detection A detector responds to the number of
  ion hits and this signal is then transmitted
  electrically to a pen which records a mass
  spectrum.
