Advice
  • Identify key idea in question. Stick to
    paragraph(s) in bold. Ensure answer is relevant.
    Use bullet points.
  • Lift words no marks. Swap for synonym or
    re-phrase.
  • Expression ? an entire sentence. Can be one word.
  • Consider the tone. Identify key words. Typical
    attitudes sarcastic, nostalgic, aggressive,
    suspicious, enthusiastic, naïve etc.

  • Consider meaning and then apply in context.
  • Quote directly. Dont forget the inverted commas!
  • Quote and comment. Look at key words in question.
    Make it clear how passage creates this effect.
    Identify use term.
  • Look at quotation given. Identify central idea.
    Look for references and techniques. You may
    quote.
  • Opposing ideas. Must be opposites. Two sides must
    be referred to _______ versus _______

    for. Refer to techniques which create this
    effect.

    up ideas. Is there a pun?

    an idea or create drama/suspense.

    reader.

  • A figure of speech that directly compares two
    different things, usually by employing the words
    "like" or "as.

    abilities.

General Advice
  • Remember one option only.
  • Use words in bold to identify type of writing
    preferred.
  • Create a brief mini plan.
  • Always keep the task in mind relevance is key.
  • Proof read you can be heavily penalised if
    errors hinder reading.

Tips
  • Title Make sure your title sums up the central
    idea/focus/lesson.
  • Show not tell. You felt afraid? Describe location
    in way which makes it seem sinister.
  • Be prepared to be critical of yourself. Self
    mocking can be humbling.

Short Story Writing
  • You must develop character, setting AND plot.
  • You can write in 1st person or 3rd and you can
    choose to write a flash forward in present tense
    but you must be consistent.
  • You must know the rules for presenting dialogue.

Tip
  • Free Indirect Style can be seen in some
    opening lines.
  • Rather than reporting thought, it is written as
    if we have a first person narrator but no I
    appears.
  • The door bell rang. Another visitor. Someone else
    to feign sympathy, to present the look of concern
    with glassy eyes and half attentive ears. She
    could not bear it. Enough was enough.
