What is the Columbian Exchange?

• the exchange of plants, animals and ideas between
  the old world (Europe) and the new world (the
  Americas)

Treatment of the American Indians

• American Indians were the natives
• Used as workers in Europeans mines and on
  plantations
• treated very poorly
• disease and overworking killed many-over 80

Slavery and Society

• American Indians were dying off so fast, Africans
  were brought in to work as slaves
• Africans were chosen b/c they were resistant to
  many European diseases
• Racism fueled the slave trade and American
  society
• Europeans ran everything and were at the top of
  society
