Facts

• Made to end reconstruction but failed because the
  south decided to do things their way.
• The president didnt want the federal government
  to be involved in racial debates or help southern
  African Americans.
• The government didnt aid the southern states and
  withdrew all the northern troops from the region
  only if the southern democrats promised to
  maintain African American rights.

• The democrats elected Samuel Tilden
• Republicans elected Rutherford B. Hayes
• Samuel Tilden was expected to win by 250,000
  votes but Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and
  Oregon (20 electoral votes) were debating. 4
  months after the commission reviewed they decided
  to make Hayes the winner. Two days later he was
  inaugurated into office.
