• Tone very somber not victorious

Assassination of Lincoln

• Lincoln survived to see the Confederacy
  surrender, but did not live to see the fighting
  completely end.
• When he was assassinated, Sherman was still
  marching through NC and had not gotten word the
  war was over.

What was reconstruction

• Rebuilding of the nation after the war.
• Much of the SOUTH was destroyed due to constant
  battle.
• Also had to help plantation owners and slaves to
  new lives.
• Had to reinstitute a government loyal to the USA

The plan for rebuilding U.S.A.

• ANDREW JOHNSON inherited Lincolns battle.
• Presidential reconstruction Very forgiving of
  the South, did not want to punish them too much.
• 1. Pardon given to Confederates who pledge oath
  to USA
• 2. No pardons to Confederate military and
  government officials or to soldiers who killed
  A.A. POWs
• 3. States had to hold constitutional conventions
  and they had to ratify the 13th amendment.

Radical Reconstruction

• Congress Passes the Reconstruction Act of 1867.
  Very Radical plan. Punishes SOUTH HARSHLY!
  (radical reconstruction)
• 1. 5 military districts
• 2. New delegates and constitutions are to be
  elected and made
• 3. All qualified male voter including A.A. can
  vote
• 4. Southerners who supported Confederacy cannot
  vote
• 5. Southern states must guarantee all citizens
  equal rights.
• 6. States must ratify 14th amendment
