Title: Solution Chemistry

1
UNIT IX
  • Solution Chemistry
  • Lesson 4 Dissociation vs ionization

2
Review
  • The formation of a solution depends on the
ability of the solute to dissolve in the solvent.
  • This interaction between the solute and the
    solvent is called Solvation

3

Review
  • NaCl dissolving in water

IX.5 THE NATURE OF SOLUTIONS OF IONS
  • DISSOCIATION
  • Since NaCl already consisted of ions in an ionic
bond, when they break apart in water. We refer to
    this as dissociation.
  • NaCl(s) ----gt Na Cl-

6
IX.5 THE NATURE OF SOLUTIONS OF IONS
  • IONIZATION breaking up of a neutral molecule
    into ions
  • Ex CH3COOH H2O ------gt CH3COO- H3O
  • Usually covalently-bonded molecules, acids and
    bases all go through ionization

7
Dissociation Ionization
  • Both dissociation ionization produce
    electrically-conductive ionic solutions.
  • Dissociation of FeBr3
  • Ionization of HCN

8
A few more vocabulary words
  • IONIC SOLID
  • MOLECULAR SOLID

9
One last note
  • Write an equation to show the dissociation of
    Na3PO4
  • When dealing with polyatomic ions( such as PO4
-3) never ever break the polyatomic ion itself
    apart!!!
