• The deep royal blue background represents deep
  space.

• This also symbolizes the flight path of the
  capsule from Earth to the moon and return.

• The original idea was to have the branch in the
  eagles mouth, but NASA thought that it looked to
  aggressive.

STS 1

• Two pictures of Columbia represent the first STS
  flight and orbital capability.
• 1st Space Shuttle Mission 1st Flight of Columbia
  Crew John W. Young, Commander Robert L. Crippen,
  PilotMajor systems were tested successfully on
  the first test flight of a Space Shuttle.
  However, Columbia experienced tile damage at
  launch due to an overpressure wave created by the
  ignition of the twin solid rocket boosters.

• Halleys Comet symbolizes the Spartan-Halley
  study mission objective.
• The payload bay doors being opened represents
  preparation of a satellite deployment.

STS-107

• Then central element is the micro gravity symbol,
  flowing into the rays of the astronaut symbol.
  The sunrise represents the many experiments that
  are the dawn of a new era for micro gravity
  research on the ISS and beyond. The science
  conducted on this mission will have widespread
  benefits to life on Earth and our continued
  explorations of space illustrated by the Earth
  and stars. The constellation Columbia ( the
  dove) was chosen to symbolize peace on Earth and
  the Space Shuttle Columbia. The seven stars
  represent the crew members and honor the original
  astronauts who paved the way to make research in
  space possible.
