1
Mission Patches
  • Obj Students will identify space patches and
    learn about patch symbolism.

with their descriptions, then create your own

The Original NASA Patch
  • The Meatball

4
NASA Extended Vector
5
Worm
  • An attempt to modernize and change

6
The Meatball Is Back
Retired and brought back to life in 1992.
7
Mercury 3
  • Capsule is shown at the height of its flight
    path.
  • Three black lines represent flight path from Cape
    Canaveral
  • Who is the Astronaut aboard?
  • What does Freedom 7 mean?

Mercury 6
  • Who is the Astronaut?
  • Where is he orbiting?
  • Three circles of mylar thread wrap around the
    Earth, what does this symbolize?
  • Friendship 7 is sewn into the shape of the
capsule that is headed for re-entry.
  • What does friendship 7 represent in this patch?

Gemini 5
  • First mission to have an official crew path
  • Who are the astronauts?
  • What do you think the Conestoga wagon represents?
  • What is their motto and what do you think it
    means?
  • The motto was actually left off the original
patch, but was added later, why do you think they
left it off then added it later?

10
Gemini 12
  • What is the capsule point to?
  • What is something else that you can think of that
has the number 12 at the top?
  • This represents the position of Gemini 12 as the
    last Gemini flight.
  • The crescent moon represents the upcoming and
ultimate objective. What do you think that
    objective is?
  • What are the colors of the patch?
  • This represents the season that it was to launch.
What do you think its launch date was?
  • Jim Lovell designed the patch

11
Apollo 8
  • Why do you think the patch is shaped the way it
    is?
  • The deep royal blue background represents deep
    space.
  • What represent the number of the mission?
  • This also symbolizes the flight path of the
capsule from Earth to the moon and return.

12
Apollo 11
  • What does the Eagle represent?
  • Where is the Eagle going to land?
  • Hint What were the first words that Buzz
Aldrin and Neil Armstrong said to NASA on this
    famous mission?
  • What does the olive branch represent?
  • The original idea was to have the branch in the
eagles mouth, but NASA thought that it looked to
    aggressive.
  • Can you find a glitch in the patch?

13
STS 1
  • Two pictures of Columbia represent the first STS
    flight and orbital capability.
  • 1st Space Shuttle Mission 1st Flight of Columbia
Crew John W. Young, Commander Robert L. Crippen,
PilotMajor systems were tested successfully on
the first test flight of a Space Shuttle.
However, Columbia experienced tile damage at
launch due to an overpressure wave created by the
ignition of the twin solid rocket boosters.

14
STS 7
  • What does the background of the deep blue
    represent?
  • What do the 7 stars represent?
  • The gold 5 pointed star represent the sex of the
crew. How many male were there? Were there any
    females?
  • The rms arm is also in the form of the 7 to
    represent the mission number.
  • Why was this patch so significant in history?

15
STS 51-L
  • Red apple represents McAuliffes profession.
What do you think her profession was? Why do you
think this patch is so significant in history?
  • Halleys Comet symbolizes the Spartan-Halley
    study mission objective.
  • The payload bay doors being opened represents
    preparation of a satellite deployment.

16
STS-107
  • Then central element is the micro gravity symbol,
flowing into the rays of the astronaut symbol.
The sunrise represents the many experiments that
are the dawn of a new era for micro gravity
research on the ISS and beyond. The science
conducted on this mission will have widespread
benefits to life on Earth and our continued
explorations of space illustrated by the Earth
and stars. The constellation Columbia ( the
dove) was chosen to symbolize peace on Earth and
the Space Shuttle Columbia. The seven stars
represent the crew members and honor the original
astronauts who paved the way to make research in
    space possible.
  • Why is this patch significant to study in the
    history of mission patches/
