Title: Lunch and Learn Training Sessions
1Lunch and LearnTraining Sessions
Lori Braun Business System Analyst Continental
Structural Plastics
2- Lunch and Learn training sessions provide a
casual atmosphere for advanced training of
current QAD users in a small group setting. - They additionally allow for the assessment of
their knowledge levels in a non-threatening,
interactive environment.
3What was my reason for doing these? What was
the business issue I faced?
- QAD was implemented at Continental Structural
Plastics in 2006 - The original IT manager no longer works at CSP.
Implementation was hurried and not necessarily
thorough. - There is virtually no one left who worked at CSP
at the time of the original implementation - Many users do not understand the impact of their
entries in QAD
4Why not just do standardizedtraining sessions?
- I wanted
- To target the specific functional groups
individually and remediate any incorrect training
they received - A more casual atmosphere
- To take them through their daily activities
5Why not just do standardizedtraining sessions?
- Users are able to ask their questions in a less
intimidating atmosphere - There is not enough time in a regular work day
- This is more of a refresher than training
6 7What types of sessions have I held?
- Initial training
- Navigation for all who chose to sign up
- No matter how long people have been using QAD,
most of them learn something from a navigation
training session
8What types of sessions have I held?
- Materials Group
- Spanned approximately 10 weeks, usually twice a
week - Customer Service
- Spanned approximately 12 weeks so far, usually
once a week

12- Let them sleep!
- (or give them the illusion they can)
13What issues did I face, being new to the company,
and how did I deal with them?
- I was unfamiliar with the users job functions,
so I asked them to give me a summary of their
daily routines, and a list of the screens they
use most often - I started with a broad outline, based on their
responses, and on my knowledge of QAD - I fleshed out as sessions progressed and they
asked questions about specific situations
14Dont be afraid to digress during a session.
- Discuss whats fresh and relevant to the users.
It can also provide additional opportunities to
uncover bad practices and correct them - Example Off site inventory issues
- As we stepped through their daily processes, we
discovered they were doing double entries of
transactions.
15What is the value of the sessions?Whats the
cost?
- Bag of chocolate candy Approximately 4.00
- An hour of my time 2 3 times a week If I tell
you, Ill have to kill you . . . - Users becoming more familiar with
QAD Priceless!
16What did the users gain from this?
- First ask What keeps people from using computer
systems efficiently? - Fear Of failure, of looking stupid, of creating
material shortages, of short shipping a customer,
the list can go on and on
17What did the users gain from this?
- As you take them through 1 screen at a time, and
get them to understand the fields and their
functions, it takes away a lot of the fear - Many times theyve said they had no idea what a
field entry did, or how it impacted another
screens data
