Emotions
  • Emotions are the strong, immediate reactions that
    you feel in response to an action

Love
  • A strong affection or deep concern for another
    person is love
  • Love exists between family, and friends but the
    deepest form of it is between a married couple

Anger
  • Anger is a strong feeling of displeasure that can
    range from annoyance to complete fury.
  • Hostility and frustration are all feelings of
    displeasure

Fear
  • Fear is felt when you feel you are in danger
  • The fear of failing can cause anxiety which makes
    you feel nervous like this guy on the left

Grief
  • Grief is a deep sorrow caused by the loss of
    someone or something
  • Grief can be caused by loss of something and can
    be very painful

Guilt
  • Guilt is a feeling of having done something wrong
  • Hannibal had no conscience nor guilt foe other
    and was able to perform unthinkable feats

Defense Mechanisms
  • Defense Mechanisms are ways to protect, or
    defend, yourself from feeling too much pain

Repression
  • Repression is the most basic of all defense
    mechanisms
  • Painful thoughts or feeling are pushed away from
    conscious thought in repression

Rationalization
  • Rationalization is making an excuse for a
    behavior
  • People do this because the reality is to
    difficult to face
  • My dog ate my homework

Compensation
  • Covering up for weaknesses in one area and
    switching to another is called compensation
  • Compensation can be helpful to develop skills in
    other areas

Projection
  • Seeing your own faults or feelings in other
    people, even when they do not have them, is
    called projection
  • People use this to cover up for their own poor
    behavior

Idealization
  • Idealization is seeing someone as being so
    perfect that you dont see how the really are
  • This is common in hero worship

Daydreaming
  • Daydreaming is the creation of make-believe
    events that seem more pleasant or exciting than
    the real world
  • People often daydream to escape from frustration
    or hurt of difficult situations

Regression
  • Regression is acting less maturely than you would
  • Regression is used when someone wants attention
    or are less maturely handling something big

Denial
  • Denial is the refusal of reality
  • People use denial when they do not want to
    believe something that has happened

Sublimation
  • Sublimation is the replacement of undesirable
    impulses with acceptable behavior
  • When someone is angry for some reason he/she can
    use sublimation to release some anger

Displacement
  • Displacement is shifting the feelings about
    something to another person who is innocent
  • After a heated discussion with one friend that
    person might take it out on another friend

Reaction Formation
  • This means to hide your true feelings by acting
    in a manner you would opposite of what you
    usually act
  • This can be result of admiring another person and
    acting as if you hardly notice them

  • Understanding Emotions and Defense Mechanisms can
    be helpful to a person growing up and learning
  • Relying too much on Defense Mechanisms can be bad
    because they will experience more problems later
    in life
