Who studies culture and why?
  • Anthropologists are scientists who study human
    cultural characteristics.
  • They see that we have cultural diversity or
    important differences among cultures but also
    that there is a lot of cultural similarity
  • See table 5.1, page 68

Culture develops as people find ways to meet
their needs!
  • Physical needs are needs such as food, water,
    clothing, shelter and safety.things necessary to
    sustain life.
  • Emotional needs are needs such as friendship, a
    sense of belonging, love, self-esteem, knowledge,
    excitement and self expression.
  • Material culture refers to the physical objects
    produced and used by the society to which you
    belong.
  • Non-material culture refers to things like spoken
    language, ideas, stories, myths, legends,
    religious beliefs and ways of behaving.

Cultural values and traditions
  • Values are the ideas, beliefs and ways of
    behaving that are valuable or important to people
    of a particular culture.
  • Traditions are customs, beliefs, opinions and
    stories passed down from one generation to
    another.
  • Traditional culture refers to practices
    established over many generations.

Pop Culture
  • This is culture shared by many groups.
  • American music and TV is a tremendous influence
    on pop culture.

Socialization
  • Socialization is the process of learning behavior
    that is considered suitable in your culture.
  • Agents of socialization include family, school,
    peer group, clubs, teams and organizations,
    community, government, religious groups and mass
    media.
