• 1960s the Telecommunication Sys. began using
  packet-based digital switching
• 1984 in CCITT recommendation I.120 described some
  initial guideline for implementing ISDN
• 1990s industry-wide effort began to establish a
  specific implementation for ISDN

• Integrated Service ability to deliver two
  simultaneous connections in any combination of
  data, voice, video, and fax over a single line
• Digital purely digital transmission
• Network ISDN is not simply a point-to-point
  solution
